Let's get this board going. Mod Time. Sirius/Keg install '03 4.6is

Well, here are some pictures of the install in my X5 (this can be done very easily in any 2003 #,5,7, and Z series):

The goal: Control satellite and Keg/PB leaving stock CD changer, etc., alone, and remain stealth. Control everything with one unit. Minimize the need for running multiple cables, etc.

Why Kenwood?
1) Product headunit fits in required space, looks great, has wireless remote control as well, totally stealth.
2) using one 13-pin Din cable can carry Keg, Sirius, and another AUX input to headunit
3) splicing into 13-pin DIN allows me to create custom cable to connect to AUX-in behind NAV unit
4) known to work well with PB/Keg
5) do not need to use FM modulator circuit

Total cost:

KCA R70FM $49.99 (Best Buy, Circuit City) ($79 crutchfield*)
Kenwood Extention Din Cable ($20 crutchfield)
Kenwood KTC SR902 Sirius Tuner $150 (BB,CC) (free crutchfield*)
Kenwood Keg ($249.99 clearance CC, $499 BB, Crutchfield)
BMW Aux in Cable: $34 (Crevier), $6 homemade
TERK Sirius Antenna $49 CF*, CC, BB

(* = if KCAR70FM+Antenna+Sirius Tuner purchased from Crutchfield, Sirius tuner is FREE)

so: $250+$130 = $430 +AUX cable gives you Sirius+KEG in beautiful install and simplicity. No need to use RCAs.

Step-by-step Instructions will be posted soon.....

My car in my garage:

BMW Aux adapter: ($57 for this Euro version, US version $34 @ Crevier):

kenwood extension cable being mated to the BMW Aux input adapter:

Neat. Great photos. Much better use for an ashtray than smoking!

I thought BMW was supposed to have a special Sirius unit that integrates with the BMW headunit.

Or do you ALWAYS need to use that LCD channel tuner that's in the ashtray?

tom-- only on the 4.6. our tire is 19" by 6" wide and does not fill the whole cavity. therefore, it comes with this handy dandy tray.

batm4n- sirius not available on models with NAV. unsure why, has some electrical glitch with nav antenna.

i do not have to look at the display. i can use the wireless remote, and flip through channels.

moreso, when using the keg, it will announce the songs if i want, without ever having to look at it.

after having ********box in my other 4.4 with DSP and no display, i prefer the display capability -- better, cheaper, and nicer than any BMW system

I've got a 03 4.4 without Nav. Does this mean they have a interface into the headunit that will let me avoid using the LCD jogger to interface?

you have an '03 which allows you to hook up an auxillary input source to your headunit.

what you use it for (i pod, kenwood, alpine, etc) is up to you....

if you want an interface that doesn't use the "jogger" check out blitzsafe or soundgate. more $$, less function than this kenwood system.

with a kenwood kac s210 a adapter, i can add another AUX input (stereo for use with the nav tv interface and a DVD player) to the system as well as another CD changer, keeping the whole thing semi-OEM and plug-and-play.

This is what i was trying to attempt to do with my 03 X5.
Looks like i just need to pickup the receiver and it'll hook up to the BMW headunit and display with my non-nav unit.
Cool..
