don't take off the radiator cap when engine is hot

driving home yesterday sitting at a stop light there is a guy on the other side of the road with a mid-90s ford taurus, hood popped open, no visible signs of an accident so must be something else. he's got a cig in his mouth and a cell phone in one hand talking to somebody. im about 20 feet away just watching and waiting for the light to turn.

next thing i know he's got his free hand in his engine bay doing something with fast hand motions (insert off color joke here) (which i figured out after what happened next was him trying to unscrew the radiator cap without burning his hand), next second the radiator cap goes shooting 10 feet into the air followed by a geyser of coolant shooting everywhere. luckily he jumped and ran out of the way and meanwhile i was praying that the geyser wouldn't hit my car. while the coolant is till burbling out with steam everywhere he plays it cool and goes back to smoking his cig like nothing happened.

i pulled off in a parking lot and went over to ask if i could help him push his car off the main road into a lot but he told me he had a friend coming and didn't need help. oh well!

the times i wish i had a video camera...

Doesn't it clearly state EVERYWHERE on US cars to not open the damn thing when the car is hot? Darwinism at it's finest.

No offense to you phoenix - if you let the car sit for a while it's alright but busting it open right away can hurt you very badly.

Oh yea it does and I know it's stupid. To add to that my brother has been blasted by his exploding radiator cap and he got 3rd degree burns all over his arm. I've never had an issue. I even opened it once when the car was running.

hahahahahaha.
That guy fails at life.
To stubbern to take help also.
It's like this lady the other day. I saw her going down the freeway where it's about to end into a nice road.
I noticed she starting going much slower and that her front left turn signal was hanging off.
Seems it just came unclipped.
Anyways I pull up next to her and tell her to roll her window down. And I yell I can help you fix that.
And she looks at me scared and locks her doors..... and drives away pretending to talk on a cell phone.
I don't know wtf was wrong with her. She thought I was going to like shoot her or something.

It just depends on how hot the car is... sounds like you've probably opened it up while the coolant was below it's boiling point @ atmospheric pressure.
