Thinking of selling - what can I expect?

2004 760Li, 72k miles. Fully loaded except rear entertainment.
extended 100k warranty expires in 4 months. Great condition. Love the car.
Thinking of selling soon and upgrading to something more recent, vs getting additional warranty coverage.

Wondering what I can expect to get...KBB estimates 35-37K, but is that realistic these days?
Does anybody have experience with Carmax? I may have them give me an estimate to get some idea.

Thanks!

The V12 is gone. They only gave me 25K for it.
Traded it in for a 750Li. Silver with gray interior. Love it, but miss the V12 motor.

Wow...you got ripped? You could have got at least 5-10K more than that.

There is zero demand for the V12s these days unfortunately. I got three appraisals.
These things depreciate a lot anyway, and things are worse right now.
But I knew about that when I bought it (as I hope others do).

There's a price for convenience and it is usually high when it comes to trades. I struggled with this when i traded in my 2002 with 94k miles. Did I want to try to sell it privately or take it up the you know what on a trade. I didn't want to have my 2002 up for sale too long and deal with all the low ballers out there trying to make a deal with me over the phone before they even look. I took $21k for my 2002 in December of 2007. I think I could have gotten $25k, maybe $26k, but it was easier to dump it on them, reduce my sales tax via trade in value and drive away with a new car.

IMH experience, CarMAX isn't the best route for any type of "exclusive" car. I say this because a 5 years back I was selling my 2001 CLK55 which was fairly rare at the time. Initially, CarMAX said that they could not find any comprable sales within a certain time period. In the end, they took a value from a pristine 430 and gave that to me as their "price". It was about $5K below WHOLESALE value of the car at the time. Needless to say, I sold it to an individual for "near-retail" value.

Sorry for the late post. I now see that you traded it in. Probably the right move. Enjoy the 750!

i think you pay the sales tax on the price that you purchase your car at, the trade in counts as money down. not 100% sure bout this but...

In most states the value of the trade in is deducted from the selling price of the car and that difference is what you pay taxes on. In some cases, it can save a thousand or so in areas with high taxes. When I went to by the car I had prior to this one, I was going to trade in a CLK55. The value of the used CLK55 was higher than the value of the car I was buying. If it had went through, I would have had no taxes to pay and the dealership would actually have had to of written me a check for $5 grand. In the end, the dealership balked so I sold it to an individual but I made certain I got at least the additional $1,800 the taxes were going to cost me. A $25K value trade in in my state would save him about $1,200 in sales taxes.

Yeah, that doesn't work in CA. They cannot think of enough ways to screw us.

In MA, for example, if the purchase price is $90,000 and they give me $40,000 on a trade, I pay sales tax on $50,000. If I sold the trade in separately, I pay sales tax on $90,000. So this is a factor to consider.

The CarFAX I just ran does show it is OK but contrary to the ad's claim, it does not appear to have any type CPO associated with it. High mileage as well (especially for an '06) but it is dang cheap. I'd be weary
