Heavy Caliper Rust on a 2003 X5

I was looking at getting this used 2003 x5 but I noticed alot of rust on the calipers - see the pictures. The rust is like that on all 4 wheels. Is that normal? I havent seen that much rust before.

u know its interesting you posted this. a few mnths ago I had to replace my drivers side calipers due to it seizing. fyi i own an 03 x5...as far as rust being on all four wheels...havent noticed it. but i would check the recall list with bmw first. there were some issues with the brake hoses and linings. a faulty brake hose caused my caliper to seize.

That does not look abnormal to me for a car sitting in a dealer's lot, especially if it has sat for a period without driving. Look at other cars in the lot and see if you can see the same thing. Or, drive this X5 hard and see if it dissapears. Some rust build up for unused cars sitting outside is common.

I took the picture after I drove it around it bit. Before it had alot of rust on the rotors, which came off fine, but the calipers were still rusted. I did notice that there were many cars on the lot with rust on the calipers and rotors like the x5.

I've had an '03 X5 3.0 since new. Looks very suspicious to me! I live in Colorado and we do not use salt on our roads. That could be a culprit. From the pictures, the rust is pretty heavy and doesn't look like what I call "surface rust". It looks pretty substantial. If I were you, I would not buy unless they give about $1-2K in allowance to replace the calipers if need be. My X5 has 82K miles on it and NO rust at all
