Instrument Cluster off of E38 740 in E39 530

A friend of mine just totaled his E38 740. It is a high cluster like mine. How could I find out if it would work in my 01 530i. From the back connections it looks identical. The mileage is about 3k off of min (on the high side). I can program the vin # with the PA Soft v1.4.0, clear the LCM and EWS, then when my my car reaches the mileage of the cluster I would do the switch out.

Obvioulsy my car is a 6cyl and his was a 8cyl, I did not know if it mattered or not.

Thanks

what year is his 740? you can reprogram the vin with pa soft, and you could reprogram the mileage...

It's not conclusive if the e39 & e38 clusters are interchangable...but I do know it would matter what the build date of the e38 is (which was left out of the details).

The instrument clusters engineered for e38s & e39s from 9/2000-up build date have the ability to reset the Service Interval Indicator lights (using the buttons on the instrument cluster) because BMW removed the round 20-pin DLC (data link connector) in the engine bay. So if your friends e38 740 was built before then, even if the instrument cluster hooked up and illuminated etc...you wouldn't be able to reset your SI lights.

(running the part nbrs thru the part cross reference comes up as the instrument cluster not sharing the same part nbrs...but physically, the high clusters in my 740iL & 540iT look EXACTLY alike) :dunno

I can only recommend that you try connecting them...it won't harm your car...the tamper dot will illuminate when you plug the e38's cluster in...but when you remove it and plug the orig back in...the tamper dot will go away. Just don't swap clusters and drive over 120 miles...then you would creat a fault in the system.

And if you do a test swap...report back your findings...it would be interesting to know if the clusters can be swapped even though the part cross reference doesn't give any indication that they can.

i can tell you that an 2000 e38 cluster works perfectly in a 98 528 (did a low to high obc retrofit)

I think it comes with an AutoPurge system for data overflow.

The cluster came from an 01 740. I have a 01 as well also with a high cluster. Most of my pixels are dead. My odometer reads around 86k (i think) and his is 89+K. I have PA Soft so I can write the Vin # to his but I can write odometer. I just dont want it not to be compatitble. They appear front and back, all plugs are same. But I did not know if the guages were set to 8's vs my 6 cyl.

nope that cluster should work perfectly in your car, you shouldn't have any problems exp, if your going auto to auto... if your car is stick you might have to copy you GM / SA / VN codes to the new cluster..

Ganesh, I am in Fresno, California, and I have same issues with my 98 740il. It was missing the pixels and i tried to fix them but messed up the speedo needle (it's showing 11mph less). I was thinking of buying a used instrument cluster and getting it reprogrammed to my vehicle.

Would you be able to help me with this. I can ship or have my cousin bring it the odometer to you. Since you have used the PA Soft, is there any specific year odometer i should be looking for? let me know

Thanks

well i have the m35080 programmer so i can rewrite the mileage on most 98+ clusters but i can program the vin on any year cluster, so if you only need the vin reset so there is no tamper dot i can do that no problem, if the mileage needs to be set then the cluster would have to have the m35080 eeprom.

Thanks for the reply. My Instrument cluster is really messed up - bad pixels and incorrect Speed and temperature readings. So i was planning on buying one off of ebay and i can send you both the original and the one i purchase. Or if you have a better solution, i am open to it.

Is there any other way I can get in touch with you and we can exchange contact info? You can also email me at bains4u at hotmail.

Thanks
Bains
