To make a long story short, my Grandpa passed away 2 years ago, he's had quite the collection of cars, but we only kept the 76 El Dorado, he bought it new at the dealership I work at, and it only has 15,000 miles, and is in all but mint condition.
I drove it today for the first time, my dad wanted me to detail it. Runs superb, so smooth with a 500 cubic inch V8. Power seats, white leather, loud arse horn, etc. Here it is all finished: ![]() ![]() I took these pictures literally minutes before this: ![]() I started it up, revved it a little, then it sat for a few seconds and shut off, with smoke immediately shooting out of the hood. I pulled the keys out and threw them, yelled fire extinguisher to my dad, and grabbed a hose. I sprayed the engine for literately minutes, in, around, and underneath. There was plastic and rubbing on fire falling onto the ground. Everytime I popped the hood and put the hood up, it shot down because the springs somehow also failed at the same time. The inside was covered in smoke and I inhaled half of it popping the hood and trying to put the fire out. It took a long time but we got it. I hope it isn't too late ![]() The outside seems fine, the hood will need repainted, and it needs at least a new windshield cowl. I don't even know if the engine is repairable, tons of wires melted, as well as every other part on the drivers side. The passenger side isn't as bad. I guess I'm lucky it didn't get to the fuel lines, and that we were able to save the car safely. Basically I feel like total sh!t, and like it was my fault somehow. I don't even know if insurance will fix it, and it might be a much bigger job than it looks like. I hate for my grandfather to look down and see me in his car while it was on fire

Wow! That sucks man. Hey, im sure you can fix it man. Just got alot of replacing to do... It could of been worse! What if you didnt have a hose to put it out? It would of been gone. And about your grandfather.. Im pretty sure hes happy that your alive. Like I said, it could of been worse.... What if fire got to the fuel lines and you blew up with it? Keep your head up and try to fix it man

No idea what happened, like I said everything on the drivers side is toast, the engine was trying to turn over while it was on fire due to wires being melted. Distributor cap completely melted together.
Thanks guys, I guess I'll be working on it if the insurance doesn't. It just sucks that it was all original, spectacular shape, and a great memory of him. Him and my Grandmother had 7 kids, and I feel like they'll all be angry at me. |
