Yeah... I really don't know any different. I've worked everyday except Sundays pretty much since I got out of high school. To be fair, there is two jobs, one is during the week and one on the weekends. My weekend job is winter only, thats why I go back to 6 days a week in the spring/summer.

Man I feel boxed in having to work 45ish hours a week. I can't imagine giving up my weekends.

I'm contemplating what direction I could take my car for moar power later this year.

Option 1: Take advantage of her OBD-Iness, do the euro maf, cams, injectors, tune and any other fun naturally aspirated bits that wouldn't be a complete waste of money. Then do a 6 spd swap (do the E46 330i trannies fit?) and a 3.46 diff.

Option 2: Supahcharger. I've heard bad things about the power curve of centrifugal blowers, My buddy actually has a Dinan car, I've been meaning to take a ride in it and see if I agree with all the riff-raff about them being crappy. That would leave a roots style blower which as far as I know are pretty damn expensive.

Option 3: Turbo. Presumably could be accomplished for around the same amount of money as a VF engineering (or similar) supercharger. I'd want to over build and underpower. Maybe I'd run like a street tune with a goal of around 350 at the motor and a race tune of like 450/475. I wonder if you could set it up with two smaller turbos that spread boost across more of the powerband than one big un.

I've never even considered adding any kind of power to this car so I feel like a newb again. What would actually need to be done to a motor with 170k to prep it for FI and make sure it stayed together? Which would be the most awesome?

Yeah, I feel like staying NA would retain a lot of what makes me love the motor so much. Sure it wouldn't be as crazy as a turbo car but it'd be pretty damn stout with 300+ hp and a short first gear.

I read a diy on putting an E46 M3 tranny in, I'd imagine the 330i tranny would fit as well and be a little easier to find. Obviously i'd have to do some pretty deep research. What kind of stuff needs to be done to a motor with 170k that's looking at many more miles of flogging?

I'm doing the knock sensors and rebuilding the vanos soon. Half or more than half of the pulleys are new. What comes to mind off the top of my head is electric fan swap, cooling system refresh (again), new alternator (its starting slower and seems generally weaker these days) Obviously the cams would end up with all new gaskets and stuff in that area, new intake/exhaust gaskets, new o2 sensor. I doubt the head gasket has ever been replaced but I wonder if its even necessary despite the mileage.

A lot of times when you see high mileage cars for sale online they say "motor rebuilt by passport/turner at 180k" I wanna know what "rebuilt" actually means so I can learn about it all and then see what would need to be done to mine to make it a spring chicken again.

Well, to me a rebuilt motor means the following:

- New piston rings
- Cylinder walls honed (or bored if needed)
- Crank journals honed, main bearings replaced if needed
- New valvetrain (cams, lifters, valve springs, VANOS)
- Etc....

When it comes to E36 engines, rarely will you find a truly rebuilt engine. Usually it just means they replaced the head gasket and voila, it's "rebuilt"!

Hmmmmm. I'm still in the dreaming, world-is-my-oyster phase of all this. If I decided to go through with this I'd buy a reasonably priced, somewhat economical and reliable daily driver to just not care about. I need to get moved into my place in May, set up a shop, build some shelves and a work bench, etc etc ec. Before I turned a bolt I'd have to map out a decently detailed plan for the car and try to price it all as accurately as I could. I'm willing to drive a not-as-nice daily to be able to spend money on my baby and make her perfect, but I dont want to end up out of cash with a half built car.

Maybe I could futz around with some interior stuff and general cleaning while I saved up through the summer and found a daily driver, then after bimmerfest I could break the motor down and send parts off the machine shops. Can anyone say S50B32 stroker?

Yeah I don't have the cash to pull anything like this off soon. However, if I get moved off contract at my job and move into a place with a little lower rent, it should be a somewhat realistic possibility. There's plenty of stuff that just requires a lot of time and not necessarily a whole ton of money, so if I spaced it out evenly and worked on it steadily I could do it over a year or two.

Not a very good video b/c of the wind but this was under 3k rpm revs...I like how it still sounds sporty when driving but gets loud in WOT
