Hah, that big picture is awesome.

I just put in the heat shield and pulled off the hood insulation. HOLY SHIIT. The car absolutely screams now. It feels a bit faster, too. Probably more the sound than the heat shield, though.

Yeah, intake heatshield. I took off the insulation because I've heard that it lets you hear the intake more, and it's prettier without it.

And weight reduction for racecar...

Nah. AFAIK, it was for reducing engine noise and snuffing out engine fires.

Just don't touch the hood lol (if it should get hotter)

Q: is necessary to use an o2 socket or can I just use an open end metric wrench?

You can use an open end wrench, but it will probably slip. You might wanna cut off the harness (if it's old), and use a box end wrench. I've never used an o2 sensor wrench, but it's just a box end with a slit in it so you don't have to cut the harness. I think autozone rents it for free, so I would check there.

Bought a 93 318IS yesterday at an auction for $250. Needs an engine, has an automatic tranny but I would prefer a manual. Can I get the running gear out of a 91-99 M3 and put it in fairly easily?

I ripped out my hood insulation like a year and a half ago.

no issues.

and yeah you can use any e36 manual in any E36

same goes for engines. (with appropriate DME, etc...)

Also, when it snows and you warm your car up, it makes a cool x pattern of snowmelt

Welcome to the fest.

Yeah, you can easily put the drivetrain from an '95 M3 or '92-'95 325 in your 318. It's trickier if you want an engine from '96+, but still doable (not worth it most of the time).

If you find a wrecked m3 you'll be lucky to find the drivetrain in it still

And @CJ o2 sensor

Craigslist. You might have to be patient.

Hate to break it to ya, the o2 sensor is not a fun job at all if it's stuck in (they all are).

How to get an engine from wrecked M3:
Purchase cheap, tough beater
Find pristine M3
Smash into said M3 with beater
Pay off unscrupulous tow truck driver to take formerly pristine M3 to your storage unit in the shady part of town
Remove engine from M3

You can thank me later.

But not the special magical BMW antifreeze. It's the "bad kind" (which I think is crap...Bebe's had Prestone in her for at least 180k miles and there was zero corrosion when I changed the water pump at 213k miles.)

Seeing as my Mother decided to throw out my ambers that I had at home, I just picked up a few and after a solid few years of smoked i'll be going back to amber corners. I'm pretty excited after I realized they'd look so much better.

Now who wants to donate wheels...
