Yeah, my better-half's sister is a designer at Lowe's so we can get some pretty deep discounts. We were thinking about approaching the landlord about buying and installing better counters (that the landlord likes too) in exchange for a small discount on the rent.

Failing that I was thinking paint (maybe a nice, neutral gray) and cheap brushed silver hardware (that we could take with us) would go a loooooong way to diffusing that forest green/cherry combo.

I just refuse to spend money/time installing counters in a rental unless its going to pay us back in some form. We do have a lot of projects and beautifications planned though, I'll definitely keep you guys posted this summer. I'll probably be modding the house instead of the car for the forseeable future anyway.

The ceiling in the master is vaulted, I just wanted my parents to notice it, hence the comment.

No I agree I wouldn't throw money at a rental either, it's just that the cabinetry is so pretty and the counters are so..........not. That said I actually had black granite counters once, and while they're.gorgeous, they take constant work to keep looking good. Shows every crum or smudge, just like a black car. Everything else there is.gorgeous though!

Edit, they do make a granite paint for laminate counters that seems to have good reviews but I've never seen it in person. And YES on brushed metal hardware - my favorite!

We're supposed to hear back on one of our offers today. The market really heated up on some mini bubble about the same time we started looking so even if we get it I'm not sure it'll appraise.

I know when I bought my first house in 2005, prices in Calgary were going up by $500 a day.

Everything we've put offers on has been multiple offers. Last property in same neighborhood went pending after 4 days on market with 24 offers and for 33k over asking.

Prices are half here as well, and long term they'll stay low for quite a while, but they have jumped about 15-20% in the last few months here.

Hmm... We'll have to look into the paint. If the landlord is down for it, I would be willing to do the work if she'd buy the supplies or give us a small discount on rent. I'm sure we can figure out something to ease the pain though, even if we are stuck with the green.

I hate real estate, frankly. It all seems so arbitrary, and I hate how people get over excited and drum something up to waaaay more than it's worth. Right before we found this place we found one, in Fairfax, with hardwood floors, on. a. lake.

Of course, when I say lake, I mean a tiny, manmade pond that wasn't even landscaped. However, when we asked our realtor, he called (this is hours after it was posted, with no interior photos) and the realtor listing the place said they were already expecting 3 applications. One of which was offering to sign a 3 year lease, and another had offered to GO UP on the rent.

Now, as a somewhat logical and hopefully sort of financially responsible person, I see renting as something you do until you can afford to buy, because you are literally flushing money down the toilet. The idea of ever offering anyone one red cent more than they were asking to rent a house, even if it had a f*ckin vending machine full of virgins in the basement, is completely absurd.

But your typical Fairfax consumer doesn't see it as the same cookie cutter house with a hole dug next to it and filled full of water. They just see, house, "OMFG IS THAT WATER, JESUS BACK-FLIPPIN' CHRIST TAKE MY MONEY NOW!!!!!!!" I just don't get it.

The same thing happens with buying a house. The consumers get so hot headed about this and that location they out-offer the crap out of each other until they've once again succeeded flushing a whole big pile of money down the toilet.

Hell, my boss showed me that phenomenon when i was working at the shop. We went to the auction once and watched idiots pay almost retail value for a couple of A6s because more than 3 people in the pit wanted it. But the headhoncho idiot has literally just bought himself a burden, because he's certainly going to destroy his $250 profit margin on his $32k car before it's even halfway to his lot.

Doin a oil change today on my buddies '95 m3 autotragic. The sad thing is he was given it by his dad and doesn't really care about BMW's that much. I'm trying to get him to swap engines and body kit with me, but I don't know if he's sold on the idea :shifty:

Why would you switch engines and bodies with him if you have the same car

uh

it was worth it. $6 matinee (before noon) at the local AMC theater-- totally worth it. Saw it opening weekend and got perfect seats without waiting a second in line, just because everyone is still sleeping Saturdays before 11am
