The sandwich idea doesn't sound like a bad idea just use the heaviest gauge you can fit up there.... maybe some rtv or gasket maker in-between to limit/dampen road noise, and any possible vibration.

For those of us in the Northeast, it looks like we stand a pretty good chance of getting whacked by this storm. You might want to get your milk, bread, TP and flashlight batteries before it hits the local news and the apocalypse mentality sets in.

http://news.yahoo.com/hybrid-sandy-w...064040714.html

Definitely gonna keep an eye on this this weekend when the forecasts get more accurate, looks like its shaping up to be a hell of a party.

For the love of god were screwed October storm re-do for buffalo blah time to take down the snow tyres and get em cleaned up. Thanks for the heads up slim had no idea that we were supposed to get slammed anytime soon. Doesn't really say when its due to hit....this week or next? Edit- The destruction starts this Saturday

Nor is it like last year's Halloween storm, which was merely an early snowstorm in the Northeast.

This has much more mess potential because it is a combination of different storm types that could produce a real whopper of weather problems, meteorologists say.

Gotta be kiddddingggg meeeeeeeeeeee

46* here this morning at 8am.

I had to add more coolant this morning. I'm adding about 3cups every 1,200 miles (about a month). Guess this head gasket really needs to get done.
At least it's only leaking outside the engine and not in.

I think we'll see it Tuesday-Thursday next week. I think im going to pick up some supplies tonight or tomorrow after work, that way we don't have to join the fray if it looks like we're definitely going to get smacked.

On a side note:

Unnnfffffffffff. I want one of these so hard.

Good call on the E, Joey, I've never driven one but I love the design in and out.

Meanwhile, the girls kept me up all night so I was pretty wiped this am.....and missed the trains. I'm now in an Altima penalty box, this thing is awful.

Cloth seats welcomed me to the plasticy interior by swiftly untucking my shirt as I sat down. It has this (thankfully changeable) mpg meter front and center on the dash roughly the size of the speedometer that wildly swings back and forth as if it's trying to gain enough momentum to leap off the dash.

The headrest is as comfortable as a boulder.

The engine has reasonable enough power, but even mildly accelerating from a stop light it sounds like you're killing it.

The brakes are on or off. No middle ground. I gave myself a minor case of whiplash 8 times leaving the parking lot and felt like a 16 year old girl just learning to drive. I doubt this inspired confidence in the rental car agents with whom I had just argued about the under-25 surcharge.

The steering wheel is cheap, hard, molded rubber and thinner than a blade of grass.

I count no less than TWELVE different materials to touch in reach of the driver, all of them cheap feeling and looking.

It has a lot of higher end features but it feels like they're just there to check the boxes on new car shoppers want lists, none of them are either well executed or well integrated. Example, stereo probably has 600W, but just sounds terrible at all volumes.

In short, this is awful

Lately I've been drooling over Mercs as well, almost like I just noticed that they're actually very nice looking cars

On a side note, found a local guy with a great rep that can replace my headgasket, timing belt/water pump, and rebuild my shortblock (rods, pistons, bearings, any gaskets) for $500

So I can either replace those items with OEM parts for roughly $750, or I can upgrade the rods/bearings/pistons and get a 2.1l stroker for about $950.

That plus the fact that I need a new turbo anyway, I should be getting vf39 off an STI and pumping out something close to 290whp.

Can I just say that I am really in pain today. From the back of my head, all the way down to my butt on the right side. I am going to have to be very careful lifting for awhile. I hate my car-killer today. PT tomorrow, so hopefully that should help. *Rant over*

Gotta love Japanese cars/parts

You can buy a full drop in 2.1 stroker for around $1200, or you can source the parts yourself (STI crank instead of a billet/custom crank), and various other little shortcuts that aren't necessary unless you're shooting for 400whp+

The guy is saying that unless my car is making noise, it doesn't pay to change anything other than the gaskets and belt, which will save me some cash

That sucks Jen, sounds like a nerve or disc is getting pinched? Were you hurt immediately after the accident?

I know right?

I'm really tempted to buy one as a daily driver. The E500s are an absurd amount of car for the money, you can get a 2005-2007 with under 70k miles for around $15k, give or take depending on the options and mileage. I've seen them as cheap as 11k, the super nice ones are like $18k, then you jump up to the 550.

For that money you get a ~300hp/349ft-lbs, a 7-speed automatic that will never break because its a Merc, "air matic" suspension with three different ride height and stiffness settings, and a feature that lifts up the whole car so you don't scrape the lip. Heated seats, automatic everything and navigation came in almost all 500s. Some of them got Keyless entry and start, air conditioned seats, massaging seats, and adaptive cruise control.

From the little research I've done, they actually seem like pretty reliable cars, some owners drove them up to 150k just doing basic maintenance and wear items and had no other issues. The only system that freaks me out is the suspension, but there has to be a more cost effective way to rebuild a blown strut than replacing the entire assembly for a gagillion dollars. If I get serious about it I'll have to look into that.

My ideal car would have the lowest mileage I could get for the $12-14k price range, in slate gray with ash gray or black interior. The factory sport pack would be nice, and the keyless go would be cool, but I could live without either. I'd throw the 5-spoke AMG wheels on from that car I posted, and maybe grab a set of lowering links like in that pic too, as long as that was the lowest setting because i wouldn't want it to be that low all the time or go any lower.

Seems like it'd be the perfect commuter/road trip car. Not the greatest on gas, and far from the cheapest car to fix, but they seem pretty solid overall. I should always have the M so its not like I'm sacrificing my ability to go around a corner either.

I'm still in the dreaming phase. In December/January I'll start test driving the cars I'm thinking about, if all goes well with my job I'll actually be able to start shopping in February/March.

Wait, why the rental car? I dislike nissan, very much so. I couldn't wait to get rid of my Rogue...

Under 25 surcharge huh? I haven't had to deal with that in a few years. Some companies don't have the surcharge, just don't remember who they are off the top of my head.

@Dino- I pulled a you today. My foot just disappeared when it came time to let the clutch out. didn't stall, but the car jerked forward and I went.

Oh CJ- called the juck yard back to see if I could pick up that vert x-brace for $40. its a no go. it the bottom cross member that the guy had. not sure how that looks like an X....

Missed train, neither BMW is in good driving condition and the Disco was patiently waiting for me at the destination train station. So rental car it was.

I threw a hissy fit about the surcharge so the manager said the agent would upgrade me free and this is what I got. I mean, come on, you're talking to a guy with a freaking commercial license that just pulled up in a nice Range Rover wearing business attire and with full insurance coverage. You really need to charge me an extra 50-MFing-% on your crappy rental car like I'm going to be street racing in a 4 cylinder CVT Altima?

I know Penske doesn't charge for their trucks regardless of age and has a 12% AAA discount, and even let you drive at 18 (which is how I got started on them). All the car places that I called charged it though.

Gahhhhh front suspension rebuild under way snapped the set pin that goes into the sway bar link so frustrated but should be an easy fix just gonna replace with a grade 8 bolt and some super jesus strength loctite.Control arm bushings are being satan though..... think ima have to go to a machine shop with a press to get them in literally broke my vice trying to get them in. On that note passenger side is completely torn apart no problems other then those two. Tomorrow finish up those control arm bushings hopefully tear down the driver-side and then get an alignment Saturday morning Ecs refresh kit is pretty high quality from what i can tell.
