I mean, nothing from that era was particularly resistant to rust, but the Japanese cars & trucks from that time seemed to rust out especially fast (the LUV was a rebadged Isuzu). Despite that, nothing rusts in Seattle. Like, at all... It's really pretty amazing. We don't have winters, or road salt, or salt in the air like the Bay Area and other coastal areas do. The result is that you routinely see totally weird and obscure stuff being daily driven here in unrestored/survivor condition without a spec of rust on it.

So! Don't leave crap in your car overnight. Roommate left his laptop in my X5 when we went to SF to celebrate a friend's birthday. I had no idea it was in there...

Came back to it this morning and found the rear driver's window borken (yep) and glass shattered everywhere. Filed a police report...

Anyone have an idea what this is going to cost? And how do I get the bodyshop to match the tint?

Anyway, Chad, I was planning to head out to your place next Saturday in the X5, looks like it will be the M3 instead. Whatever, I think my jack fits in the back...

Got some progress on the 328is' clutch. Transmission is now completely off. Decided while it's all out to change the rear main seal, flywheel bolts, get a Z3 1.9 shifter and replace the fan clutch. Scope creep, I know...

I never said it was a good deal! The 'Cuda didn't have AC and the LUV did. His GF at the time didn't like riding in the 'Cuda because it was too hot.

And yes, he'd like to build a great big ass kicking machine and strap himself to it. That model 'Cuda in street condition goes for about $50K now. I've seen some go in the Mecum's auction for over $100K.

LUV's are apparently worth $700

Actually, I'd prefer the giraffe, hippo, tiger and elephant that are likely just out of frameshot!

Oh dude......that blows. Call Safelite, they're probably the cheapest you can get and I've had pretty good experiences with them. They won't do tint, but you can go to ye local tint shoppe and have them match it.

That's great that you're bringing a jack since my Harbor Crap one popped. It'll be on stands when you get here a la OEM pogo stick but will need to come off (and maybe back up again ) at some point. At least you'll get good gas mileage on your long journey.

@ Jared...sorry for the break in. Not only does it suck financially, but I always feel violated after someone's broken in. Hope you can fix up the car!

@Don...nice shots of the 'verte. I admit, I had the top down yesterday afternoon driving to Hartford (with a winter coat on, seatwarmers toasty, and heat blasting 80). Tomorrow is likely the last 'top down' day of the season for us!

@New Englanders....my company is hiring for entry level helpdesk IT staff at our Boston office. They are likely looking for a BS in computer science or similar experience. Lotus Notes, Windows 7, iPad/iPhone/Blackberry experience a HUGE plus (especially LN). If you know someone, ping me. I know the IT manager personally and he's a great guy (and we are one big company with plenty of growth opportunities).

@New Englanders Part Deux...if you know anyone with an indoor garage space for rent, I now need one for the funmobile, starting next weekend .

Wait, Jen... Does this mean the funmobile is going to be sold to make room for the newly found even-more-funmobile? I thought you were supposed to be looking for a winter car??

Yes....my M3 will be a year rounder, at least for now. Toying with the idea of buying a real winterbeater at some point, but first, I need a garage before I collect any more cars.

Franklin/Franklyn (sorry, can't remember which!!!)....that is a tempting offer. But it's a bit too far away, I think....

This would also make a pretty sweet daily for me. http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-s...28514242&Log=0

Roughly the same price range as a GTI/GLI, or TL. But its got more features than the VWs and is more fun than the TL. The trade off is it would be more of a pain in the ass than anything else I'm considering.

I'll go put on my flame suit.

You don't need a flame suit, you need a dang HELMET because you need to be beaten about the head and shoulders until you come to your senses. Ask Chad the Tall/Elder.

It won't take that long. I used to be just like you. I had a 2003 325i with under 90k miles that didn't have one single rattle or imperfection in the interior. On the highway you could whisper to your passengers if you wanted to.

Then I decided that it was too boring for 18 yr old me, and I bought a 142k mile M3 with an interior that seemed to just be resting where it was supposed to go, not actually bolted down, and an exhaust that will almost pop your ears below 2k rpms, but it didn't matter because I was 18 and hardcore about it.

It didn't matter anyway because I could scrape by without my car if I needed it in school, and even when I was using it, I only had to drive like two miles at random hours of the day.

Then graduation happened, my commute went from 5 minutes to 45, and I can't remember the last time I saw a decent curve without a fatass SUV attempting to lumber through it in front of me. Your priorities change pretty quickly when the only time you can exceed 70mph for more than 5 minutes is on a roadtrip, which you never take because you're working all the time to pay for your house and car(s).

Remember I'm not shopping for an E36 replacement, just something that's a half decent compromise between comfort, sportiness, gas mileage and reliability to drive while the E36 goes under the knife next year.

Well, in my defense, I'm considering a plain ole regular A4 with a 4 banger in it. Not an ancient V8 that has to be installed with a shoehorn or a quadrillion mile stanced out trainwreck.

Yes, see what you have to look forward to? I can't count the number of "un-fun" vehicles I've had in my life because of finances and practicality. The hot rod/hooning days were a distant memory when I bought my first BMW. It reignited my interest in cars, and working on cars went from a dreaded task to something I enjoy, a feeling I hadn't had since the hot rod/hooning days of my youth.

Thought..... get a 318ti for a daily.

you already know ALL about the e36 platform... why not just roll with it in a less effective way? still have a semi fun car and a car that looks good too....

hell you can find them cheap now too...

You're a glutton for punishment. The problem with Audi is, unless you're a midget, you can't do jack to them. Also, that auto eats torque converters, poor design.

And let me remind you:

Really? I don't find this at all.

I can't take a vacation because I have to dam much work to do!

But I do remember doing the same thing with I commuted from Eastern Market area in DC, on 66 down to Fairfax, VA... I drove the Nissan Rogue most of the time rather than the 318. Unless I left super early to avoid traffic, or stayed really late. So I do understand what you mean.
I'd go for something with as small a payment as you can get. Cheaper the better...

Its not that bad! With two incomes (from my wife and I), I'd say I get to have some pretty good stuffs. More so then when I was in college and rocked a 98 Civic EX. with a butload of miles... but life experiences may vary.

WARNING- DUMB QUESTION BEING ASKED IN 3...2...1...
