But it was you second Audi purchase. You definitely should have known better.

Was a different engine, transmission, and chassis. Wanted to see if the first was just a bad combo. I learned my lesson.......it wasn't!

Just knocked out two cars on my test drive list:

1st Gen Mazda3 Hatch 5 spd: I was not completely disappointed with the horsepower. In fact, when you combine it with the steering and freaky responsive brakes, it kinda has a miata-esque feel to it. Its slow as balls but encourages driving like a scorned 17 year old and makes it hard not to grin.

I somehow broke traction accelerating not-that-hard in 1st gear, and if the salesman wasn't with me things would've gone down a lot differently on that off ramp.

Its quiet, comfy, the motor is smooth. The throttle is a little over-responsive for my tastes, but any economy car from recent history is the same or worse. The clutch is light and easy to engage, and the shifter was my favorite part, it falls into gear.

The space is impressive when you fold down the rear seats too, it would definitely hold a set of BMW wheels or probably an engine if I needed it too.

2nd Gen Acura TL Auto: Extremely comfortable and solid feeling. Its like sitting in your own personal vault. And that's very good. Its also very powerful, which is again, very good. The trans was surprisingly snappy in slapshifter mode.

The steering was pretty dull, the brakes felt like brakes, and the whole driving experience is just sterile. I knew the power was there but I wasn't really tempted to use it. The only time it made me grin was womping on it from 60-80mph, 100% of which was totally illegal on that highway.

The Mazda3 on the other hand had me grinning as soon as I hit the on ramp, and I was dying to see just how much that puny little thing would give me, and wishing the salesman wasn't there so I could find out. The acceleration was totally acceptable at in-town speeds, it only felt economy car slow when I asked it to give me all it had at 60mph, which is probably a good thing for a daily driver. Not a fun thing, but a good one.

Consensus- Kinda like the MiataHatch.

I still have a handful of things I want to drive. I'm still really into the idea of an MS6, but I'd spend at least 12k for a good one and my insurance payment would be $90/mo JUST for that car, on top of the $100/mo I pay now. So for that to be a realistic possibility I'd either have to get a much higher salary than I'm expecting in February, or do much less stuff to the BMW next year, or both.

I could get a Mazda3, or TL (meh) or one of the other cars I want to drive for $7-9k, and have a non existent insurance payment on it. I could afford to buy it now, and when salary-time comes around, should I actually get more than I'm expecting, I can use the money to 1.) pay off the cheapo daily even quicker, 2.) be a grown up and save it, 3.) ball out on the M3.

Don't forget you'll get a multi car discount and no longer be rated as primary on the m3, so the insurance should go down significantly on it.

Yeah I did the quote right to include how much each car would be driven and get the multicar discount. I'm currently paying $101/mo, the quote for the M3+MS6 was $190/mo, the quote for M3+GTI was $136, so I can only assume a Mazda3, TL, or anything that could be considered less sporty than a GTI would be even better.

The Grand Touring package is where its at on the Mazda 3, on top of automatic climate control you get leather, heated seats, sunroof, auto-dimming mirror, HIDs, and a bose stereo. There's only like two GTs within 200 miles and both of them are priced handsomely, but I bet I could turn one up for less than $9k or so.

EDIT: Err, exactly like this one: http://www.autoplexva.com/detail.asp...=4945010&.aspx I swear I posted this before I found this one.

Yep, those 1st Gen Mazda3s are excellent cars. Pretty much my favorite budget economy car. They're SOOOO much nicer than anything else in their class at the time. I test drove a few of them 4-5 years ago because I was seriously considering getting one before I got my E36. And then I test drove one again about a year ago when I was shopping for a 2nd car, but the Subaru won only due to having AWD. Otherwise, I'd 110% have gone for the Mazda3.

Starbucks finally created a mug for us E36 owners and our "special" cup holders.

Crazy part is this is actually a mug and it's $11.

How tall are you? My only major concern was I felt like I couldn't quite get the seat back far enough at 6'3". I also don't know if the GT model with a sunroof would take away a lot of headroom.

I wish I had fiddled with it longer to see if I could get a more comfortable position. It certainly wasn't bad, but it would get uncomfortable on long drives.

I'm not that tall. 5'11". The moonroof will definitely cut into headroom somewhat, maybe by a little over an inch. You can probably find those specs online fairly easily.

In other news:

Brake job from hell

Yes, that's my wheel bearing on the floor. Caliper guide pin snapped so the caliper had to be cut into 4 pieces to remove. The bearing didn't play nice. And tomorrow, I have to deal with the side that has (for all I know) 180k salty miles on it
