Not at all, I have the external speaker mounted under my armrest, and the mute button mounted in a reachable (if somewhat awkward) in the rear ashtray. The on/off switch is mounted in front of my shifter besede the ASC switch.

Well luckily for me, I just tested it with headphones and it only needs the $3 speaker

Some neat stuff about it: The power cord is just telephone cabling, so I was able to extend it easily using a coupler and spare cable. Also, there's a mute switch right where it plugs in, so that's handy. And for now, I'll just control it the power by plugging/ungplugging.

Damn BMW for only putting one cig lighter on the front, though.

Actual miles in an E30? No such thing.

Seems like a good pickup, though!

Cut open the rear part of the 3rd brake light housing and reinstalled. The escort fits nicely, but it's pretty obvious from the outside (would be less obvious if I painted the casing black.)

It will fit under the plastic vent trim (totally invisible), but I feel that the reception would be much worse since it is blocked by the rear deck/ plastic housing. What do you guys think?

THAT looks less cheesy than mounted on the windshield?

Your radar horn is completely off axis and you've removed all chances of laser detection. Cool if you don't need actual detection and just enjoy the beeps of false alarms I guess.

Nope! The water pump is a centrifugal pump for LIQUIDs. It has zero ability to pump air. Once an air bubble reaches the pump, circulation stops and you get overheat.

It's not so much getting it level. Every layer of material that the radar signal has to travel through to get to the antenna of the detector reduces it's sensitivity and therefore its warning range. Radar signals in the bands the speed radars use do not travel well through materials like seat cushions or head rests and not at all through human heads or torsos. Mounting it in the third tail light area is too low because it won't have a clear line of sight looking ahead of you and you'll have significant blind spots looking ahead.

Laser is light that's not visible to the human eye but it is still light. While propagation of the radar signal through seat backs and head rests is poor, propagation of the laser is ZERO. The detector has to have a clear line of sight in order to detect laser based speed detectors.

Its tough to get a ticket because you didn't have a detector. It will be dumb to get a ticket because you have a detector installed badly.

That is a steal for $750!

Even if you've got to do some motor work to get it running you've got some room to do that and still flip for some $$ if you wanted to.

Very true.

I'll wait for ed to pitch in with how exactly he mounted his, since it seems he has had good luck with it.

Except that it's pretty obvious to a trooper that's walking up from behind your car. Your best bet would be to keep it on your windshield to minimize your chances of an issue, and yank it if you get lit up. Works better than trying to talk your way out of a ticket even without a detector.

Up high for best radar range, down low for best chance of laser detection. Choice depends on what your cops use.

As it heats up the liquid will pressurize and expand and should have been enough to pop a little coolant through the pump, especially running a low mix of coolant.

I've been feeling very noob like lately. Just one thing after another with this car. It's getting to my brain.

As above, as the liquid gets hotter it should expand to eventually reach the pump, no?

Also managed to get two lower B pillar trims for dads E38 and all the center caps, total $140. Not the deal of the century but not bad with the caps and trim panels.

Unfortunately that is a big a$$ no! The coefficient of expansion for water (coolant is essentially the same) is .000207 per degree C, which means it's volume hardly increases with temperature within the normal operating range of the engine. When it heats to the point of steam it transitions into the gas laws (((P1 x V1)/T1) = ((P2 x V2)/T2))and then you get significant expansion, that's why you get the so called "boil over". When you've got a couple of cubic inches of air trapped in the coolant circuit the pump just simply can't pump. It will move fluid until the air bubble gets to the pump and then circulation stops.
If all it took was just a little bit of coolant getting the pump the system would be relatively immune to air entrapment and wouldn't have to be bled.

Crap Jesse, that is really nice! What is the long term plan for this car?

Oh, and hello from the Buckeye state. Man, that was one lonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnng drive in a non-BMW. Blech.

Disappointment obliviated by seeing my niece, nephew and family! All worth it :-)
