You actually might have a good fit in Charleston. Mid-sized city, big enough to get stuff but not overwhelming, and historic and beautiful. And loaded with women. Google that if you don't believe it (I'm married so it doesn't help me anymore) The city is becoming very well known for its food industry. We have 3 James Beard winning chefs, over 200 restaurants in the downtown area that are mostly high to middle priced places that constantly need staff. You could easily rent for that price range. NO ONE speaks French and we have 0 smog laws. We don't even have a state vehicle inspection. The taxes on my car are less than $20 a year, my house (250k value) is taxed at $1300 per year. It does get hot, but we have no snow and the weather is pretty decent in the winter. Tourism is the #1 industry which means food, and lots of it. Plus Conde Naste voted Charleston the best city in the world to visit last year, so it'll only get bigger. I'm a part time tour guide (which pays VERY well) here so I know probably more than I should. But if you want to come visit let me know.

Not just Ed, if anyone is coming here, let me know. I can save you a lot of trouble and Google searching and hook you up to some degree. For free, I don't charge for advice. Or tours for fellow E36 owners.

No trouble, just beware of anything you see that says NORTH Charleston, different city. North Charleston looks like someone took a dump on a parking lot. There is nothing charming about it. It's where my day job is. I'll film my glorious drive in one day.

Good place to start with the restaurants these are going to be the upper tier.

The motor isn't unique to the Jag at all. It's a Ford Duratec 30, same thing as the Mazda 6 V6, Ford Escape, and others. It has some minor changes for beret performance but it's not hugely different.

The AWD 3.0 Sport with a manual should be a fun car. To be honest I've never driven an X-Type, but I remember sitting in a Sport manual at an auto show when I was a kid with the carbon fiber dash inserts and thinking how much I liked the looks.

The interior definitely has it's cheap spots but it's better than a Jeep. I think the overall design and layout is very appealing inside. You'd get better mileage and more acceleration, and it would corner better with a more comfortable ride. Except for if you need to go off road or in deep deep unplowed snow, you'll get all the benefit of the Jeep having power at 4 wheels when it's slippery.

I've considered them several times but never pulled the trigger.

I'd say go drive one just to see what you think, you might like it.

PS, Ken, sorry, but you're way off there. Ford did leaps and bounds for Jaguar. I personally hate Ford as a company, but I like Jags and I have to say that what Ford did for Jaguar was incredible.

Brittany keeps talking about wanting to move to the east coast, we've actually been looking at VA and NC, but I don't think I'd like it half as much.

Yeah IDK, maybe I'll sit in one. It doesn't do a whole lot for me, it seems like an E46 330xi would be a better car and I don't really want one of those either. Its mainly the oddball factor and that BRG/Ivory color combo I like.

When I go on my next round of test drives in a few weeks I'll try to find one to sit in. My loose list now is:

GC Overland
Mazda3
E46 330i
X-type

and if I'm bringing home considerably more bacon than I expect to be:
MKV GTI DSG
Mazdaspeed6
Leggy GT

I'm 95% sure I want the GC, but want to give some other stuff another round of fair consideration. $9k will buy an excellent example of any of the first batch, $14k buys a clean one from the 2nd.

Respectfully disagree. The result of Ford+Jaguar was a Ford in faux Jag skin. The best of neither. It didn't run like a Jag, it didn't drive like a Jag. It was only Jag-ish in appearance....emphasis on the ish.

The X-Type was a reskinned Ford, that much is true. But look at the brand as a whole. It's similar to BMW with Land Rover: they spent a while racking up losses selling a product they had no involvement with developing. After pouring tons into development, they sell the brand and don't reap the reward.

Ford sold Jaguar in 08. Barely a year later and they had this insanely incredible all new XJ that was released. That wasn't Tata, that was Ford. That car is top of it's class, go drive it. I've driven it and the F01 and I'd take the Jag all day, every day.

XF was also Ford and was a huge step forward for Jaguar. I'd imagine the beginning of the F Type even started at Ford. Look at an 88 XJ and a 98 XJ and tell me Ford's capital and manufacturing knowledge didn't do wonders for Jaguar, and it only improved from there.

The X was mostly Ford and the S shared some Ford, but the XJ and XK have always been all Jag with inconsequential parts from Ford.

Jaguar is making a huge comeback with their products, and without Ford they'd likely be out of business right now.
