Not since November. He moved to California that's why he was selling me the car. I saw were you had responded to a question of his about his cylinder one misfire. It still does that. It was a good guy. I haven't talk to him since he moved and changed his number. He didn't have a cell phone.

Now that I've been using a radar detector I cant go without one... it does make me laugh how many cops go along without the radar on though. I know for a fact all my local departments are KA, K, and X.. they pass me all the time without the detector going off.

Well it doesn't really make sense to have it on when they're driving along, but I did see a few on the side of the interstate just playing on their computer without radar on.

Also, they could have instant-on. Which you gotta watch out for.

Here are the wires I'm actually jumping:

I was hoping that the wiring diagram would give me some clues and I could snip or bridge something to make it come on during the diagnostic check but go off afterwards. But what if, as you suggest, I stick something in my little wire jump that delays giving power from the violet/green wire to the blue/black for 20 or 30 seconds? I just wouldn't even know what to look for at radio shack.

EDIT: Thank you google: http://www.wolstentech.com/products/...delayrelay.php

Sounds like I could get a positive switching version of one of those things, set the delay to 30 seconds, ground the relay where the control module is grounded, use the vi/grn as the trigger and the blue/black would be the output. I'd just have to go find a 12V supply for the relay somewhere, could I piggyback off of one of the center console light things? (which haven't worked in my car for like, ever)
Looking at the wiring diagrams in the Bentley Manual (page ELE-165) the violet wire that goes to connector A pin 15 on the cluster supplies the 12V to the SRS light. Connector A pin 14 (blue/black wire) goes to the SRS module which provides a ground to the lamp to turn the SRS light on. If you cut the blue/black wire, and splice the side from the cluster to the gray/black/yellow wire coming off connector B pin 11, that connects the SRS lamp to the ABS lamp. When the ABS module runs it's self test and turns the ABS light on for a few seconds the SRS lamp should do the same thing.....

Fail 1: Uses OEM jack.
Fail 2: Places jack stand in seemingly random place, rather than the designated location.
Fail 3: Initially tightens drain plug before realizing he needs to switch his ratchet.
Fail 4: As if on cue, opens drain plug without the catch pan being directly underneath.

His wisdom continues into Part 2...

I actually had that catch pan before. It was the biggest piece of junk ever. I though it in a fire after just one oil change. Frist the hole for the oil is just too small. I did exactly what the guy did and miss the hole. Then both the caps leaked. I wrapped it in towels and put it in the trunk of my car. Then I drove off to auto zone. By the time I got there both caps had leaked oil all over the catch and towels. I agree that the guy is nuts, but that oil catch sucked. For my next oil change I bought this and did not have any problems.

BTW Any BMWCCA members, Office Depot gave me jack squat as a discount! So I just left and went to Best Buy and got what I needed.

Jon,
Maybe you should continue the thread with updates and things you test.

Did he tell you about the cyl 1 misfire? I hope so.

After reading through it, I'd put my money on a bad valve.

He did, but he kind of have me the impression it was a computer issue with the US issue coils. The car is a Euro delivery. He said the code was "occasional" which it isn't. It's daily. I may make a new thread, but I don't want his email lighting up and it seeming like I'm calling him out for covering something. I hope it isn't a freaking valve.

About once a month or so it will run really really rough. But as soon as you turn the car off and turn it back on again it goes away. So he never experienced it and apparently I have.

That's not going to be a valve. Valves don't magically fix themselves upon restart.

My money's on coil or injector.

switching coils around only takes 10 minutes. and pulling the fuel injectors isn't particularly hard.

Jon, if you pull the fuel rail with the injectors still seated, from the manifold and one of the injectors is drier than the others, there's a fairly good chance that it's not functioning right. You can also tell if one of the plugs looks more ashy than the others that it's running lean and starving from fuel loss.

only reason I ruled out the coil was in the fixit thread his PO said he swapped them around the misfire stayed with cyl 1.
what thinking a sticky valve or something, but an injector sounds pretty good too.

how many miles you got on that?
