So was I in the wrong for calling a deal off with the guy i was supposed to get a car from yesterday? It was a little shady from my eyes. I couldnt see myself bring 4k in paper to his house. I was gonna give him a Certified bank check from my moms bank

My brother assumed since he wanted cash, it wouldnt leave a trail and that he probably had something to hide.
like the car mightve been stolen or something fishy

Idk, some people just don't trust checks. I would run the vin and see if it's stolen(usually people don't sell stolen cars). not 100% sure how you'd go about that though.

Call the DMV they have all the info there if you have a vin number just hope you get someone decent had to do it when we bought our snowmobiles. Mk ill pm

I ran a carfax. clean title but my brother knows it was hit. he saw the bondo mud through the paint

There's still a paper trail for the title. In all my buying and selling I've used cash every single time except once. Cahiers checks can be forged.

Nah- I always use cash for buying and selling. When I sold cars, I have always had a cash only policy.
I helped sell my parents 01 X5 back in 05- sold it for $19k. CASH money.

You are supposed to be able to call the issuing bank, give them the check number and they can confirm if its real or fake. When we tried, the bank was closed... so we did it my way. I FedEx'ed the title overnight when the check cleared-

i feel bad about taking out amounts of over 1,000.00 in cash so if i'm buying something I'll write a personal check and wait for it to clear, I know it's not better than cold hard cash but carrying 4k in bills is a HUGE liability personally. I carry a gun everyday and I still wouldn't even think of walking around with that. Although a good way to do it is, the seller meets you at your bank with the title, and you make the withdrawal there and sign it over on the spot. I've done this and it's probably the safest way to deal with cash.

This is a pretty good idea. I've bought quite a few cars but they've all been less than 1300 so I haven't had this problem.

Best way right there well put. When we sold our jetboat little seadoo the guy came with 9k in cash. I've never seen such a stack of 20's in my life then my dad made me put it in my coat and sit like i was wearing a straight jacket the whole ride home

I used to carry large sums of cash at a previous job in DC/VA Area. Part of my duties were to count the revenue intake for the day, however I didn't work on weekends. So, on Monday I counted Friday, Saturday and Sunday. On an average day we would take $3k in cash, while the weekend was around $8k in cash plus another $10k or on credit cards.
I got comfortable handling that amount at any given time.

Most I've ever had on my person, that actually startled me after I was done counting, was $87k CASH. All size bills (though mostly $20 and $100. That was one day of intake.

I bought my car for $3,500 in cash, and sold my 318 vert for $4,250 cash.


Bills can be fakes too- for work I've used marking pens, but never bothered for my personal business. If the bill looks a little to crisp, I get a little nervous.

honestly not bad at all. 116k on original 318 radiator and just now leaking....can't complain. Going to get this new one in saturday woop woop. Then when gets warm time for the oil pan gasket. Car will be leak free for bimmerfest 2013. Got that friday off this year so now have to find a hotel "or" someone to stay with friday/saturday night.

when i worked at a chain muffler shop i had to do the bank drop a couple of times, there was like 5g's a little locked bowling ball type bag and im in this bright yellow turd-tastic ford ranger with the company logo on it clearly letting all of the plaza know what i was doing haha.

i did buy a rifle in all cash once, at a gun show (and they did an FBI background check via phone) and it felt so weird to not have any paperwork or title or anything just handed the sales rep a stack of 20's and left with a brandy new AR15... which i later used in trade for the 328i gotta love the midwest.

i need to buy an expansion tank and the cowl piece that it mounts to... mine is just zip tied to the radiator right now but i know when i go boost i'll have to relocate it so i want to buy the euro tank and put it somewhere else.

A few safety tips for everyone else from your resident banker:
-Always look up the banks number and call them. If the check is fake, using the number on the face if the check will connect you to a fellow con that will "confirm" it's real
-All Banks work on credit. An item that posts to your account can still be fake, stopped, or NSF. The government only allows us a couple days (NEXT day for the first 5K of cashiers checks, money orders) to credit your account. So, on credit we give you the money taking a risk the check is good. Even though the money is in your account in a couple days, sometimes it can take up to TWO WEEKS or more for us to have a fake check returned to us, at that point your title its gone and your account is debited for the check amount. What you can do is make a copy of the check before you deposit, and before you give title, call the issuing bank after 4-5 business days and ask if the check has already cleared the account and if there's any possibility it would be returned.

Yep, that's a very good way to do it. I've flown across the state with 8K before, really doesn't bother me any. I remember buying a car at 10Pm in downtown Sac counting out 6500 sitting in a car with the seller in a parking lot. No joke, he didn't even want to count it. He said he had my info and trusted me and wanted to get the hell out of there. I didn't wanna risk accidentally giving to much so I double checked. No big deal to me, he was sweating bullets.

Whew, that's a bunch. I remember counting things like that balancing the vault when I was in the branches. Between being the treasurer all through high school, working in a bank, and buying and selling so many things, carrying cash really doesn't phase me any more. Definitely risks, but if your not advertising it you're fine.

The counterfeiters have figured out how to fool the marking pens. You can actually tell a counterfeit by feel the best of all methods once you've been trained and done it for a short while. They just feel different in your hands. Watch for the security strip in the bill and the watermark, and the color changing ink. Also make sure the face is correct for the number. Not common anymore, but raising bills can still happen on older ones.

None of the above directed at anyone, just general info for everyone for basic safety.

Asking for cash on CL is the smart thing to do, not the shady thing to do.

And this is the safest way for all parties. The seller knows the bank note is legit, and the buyer isn't going to get mugged inside a bank.
