I never got ticking after autocross, but I did get power steering whine for a few minutes. I also run heavy oil, which helps for lifter ticking.

How can a stiff suspension prevent fluid from moving around?

It's so fun to get those kinds of boxes in the mail. Are you installing new rear shocks as well?

Rears have less than 5k on them. So no... I actually wasn't going to install the rear springs yet. I will, but not tomorrow.

What should I do with the old bilstein pss coilovers? Considering they are blown...

No worries. The first time I heard it was after my buddy (p-car owner) took my car for a spin. Yikes!

I'm so jealous! I can't wait to do an auto-x. But gotta get my car up to snuff first. Almost there!

What do you mean Dino has a last name? I thought he was just Dino.

Jon,

Here's the tech inspection list for our club.

TECH INSPECTION CHECKLIST

Verify all of the following conditions are met before arriving at the event. Our tech inspectors will check your car and affix a sticker to your windshield to indicate it passed.

Wheels are safely attached and exhibit no cracks. Wheel nuts/bolts are tightened to the manufacturer's recommended torque value.
All loose items are removed from the vehicle. If a video camera is employed, it is securely mounted. If your floor mats are not secured with Velcro or snaps, remove them.
Tires show no cords, belts, or cracks in the tread or sidewall.
Seat belts and/or harnesses are properly installed and in good condition.
Brakes are in good working order, have no leaks under pressure, and have adequate fluid in the master cylinder.
No fluid leaks (fuel, oil, coolant, power steering fluid, transmission and differential fluids, brake fluid) are present while the vehicle's engine is running.
Wheel bearings, steering mechanism, suspension, and shocks are in good operating condition.
The exhaust is in good working order.
Closed-toed shoes are mandatory for drivers. No open-toed shoes, sandals or "flip-flops" are allowed on course.
Roll bars, if installed, are properly and securely mounted.
Battery is securely mounted.

Jon, I'd keep ASC ON for the first one or two runs (unless you only get 3 like in SCCA, lame). Then turn it off once you know the course. I would also pump your tires up 1-2 lbs over recommended. This will help keep your excessive wear down. If you can, get a coach for the whole day. They will teach you lots. I got a friend of mine to come out for an autocross and hooked him up with one of the better coaches, and he is a way better driver already. He went from 73 seconds on the course down to 57 over 6 runs! I would also recommend riding along with others if possible. This helps you learn the course and how other folks navigate it. If there is time, let an instructor drive your car to show you as well. Just don't feel bad when they nail it and you spend all day never getting near their time. They're good enough at this to be an instructor! I remember one particular student (E39 M5) in my car control clinic being furious for struggling on a skidpad exercise right after I drove it with 4 people in the car perfectly.

He said: "It's my car dammit! I should be good at it!"

I said: "Well there's a reason I'm teaching this class... Every car may be different but the feedback you get from a BMW feels similar enough to master a simple exercise like this. You'll get it before we're done, for sure, then you can do donuts."

And he did.

Boys, what do you think the oil (a fluid) is doing while those g-forces are acting on them? A baffle helps keep oil in the pickup region, but a stiffer suspension won't affect the actual oil. I feel really sad that I have to explain that.

If anything body roll might REDUCE oil sloshing around. Ever hold a cup of water or something in a car in the twisties? If you let the cup angle with the g-forces it's easier to keep all the water inside. If you keep the cup perfectly still it will splash out easier.

Um.... You guys know that liquid moves around based on g-load, right? Doesn't matter if you're flat track racing with a nearly rigid full on race suspension. If you turn hard, all the fluids move to the opposite side, even if there is virtually zero body roll.

Fwiw, I adore HUD. But then, that's a technology that lets you be MORE focused on the road, not less.

I missed the suspension/fluid discussion............oh dear, you guys know better than that.

Maybe this will help a bit, at least that's the intent. The speeds you'll see of the experienced drivers will be much faster than you expected which may give you an initial jolt of anxiety, that's normal and after seeing more runs you'll see that it's OK. The thought of having someone else drive you car will cause even more anxiety, but the instructors typically have decades of autoX and racing experience and have driven everything from grandma sedans to shifter karts. They'll know the limits of your car and will keep the run well under that. It will likely scare the crap out of you, BUT when it's done you'll realize that it was under full control, the car never got out of shape, and they were actually driving somewhat casually. You'll see the difference in your speed and their speeds and it will be enormously helpful going forward as you've seen there is more capability in the car than in your driving, at least for your first few events.
Depending on the facility they can run track days in parallel with auto-X. Where is it being held?

Yes I was considering the lateral forces applied to the fluid. I also considered the fluid container. The high side of the oil pan bottom is on the inside while you turn. The difference in relative high "bottoms" between race and stock isnt something that I know. However, i know mine rolls like a b*tch on stock springs. I also don't know how far from level the surface of the oil gets at the max lateral g force of the car. I just know body roll will make it easier for the fluid to move to one side.

Just some crazy brainstorming

I wouldn't mind one of those later on, especially the ones Michelin allows on the Laurens Proving Grounds upstate or the ones at the BMW plant in Greenville.
I was just looking at the site with Google Earth. Looks like they use the East parking lot because you can see the markings and car tracks. There won't be any conflict with track day events since there's no track there LOL.

Looks like your SCCA region is holding a PDX at Carolina Motorsports Park on 9/15-9/16. That might be worth looking into also.

I highly doubt you'll get dinged for a leaky PS hose. They aren't going to get underneath your car. Anyway, it's fun to just feel the car move around and learn the limits in a safe environment. Don't feel bad if you spin (I did), since there is only one way to find out how much is too much. As a novice, you will undoubtedly find more fun in trying to make improvements from one run to the next, rather than being concerned with how everyone else is doing. And although most auto-x courses are extremely safe, always take the time to identify possible risks posed by a poorly conceived course layout. Don't want to end up like this dude:

I've seen this video a couple of times, but I just noticed that it looks like he did that in the finish chute? In the initial wider view it looks like the timing gear/finish line is on the far left......

Jon, since it's an SCCA event you should be good on course set up. They have a pretty robust safety program and standard for course design.

Good luck and have fun! Cones are meant to be hit
