Did you look to see what you have under the foam?

Nothing, it's bare metal.
I have removed it a few times to vacuum it.

If you notice the foam, it has many crazy shapes in it. These shapes were designed to hold various computers/electronics. A clever idea/location - NOT.
When the trunk would leak it would flood the electronics costing big $$$$ so they moved the electronics on (hopefully) most of the cars and still used the same foam.
SO if you have nothing there (that is good) the foam is generally just padding/spacer at that point.
As you noted I think that a full tire spare could easily fit there.
Also you could easily put the (flat) tire in there, and put the foam above the hatch - keeping the trunk a little cleaner.

If you have an E61, Comfort Access on the door handles won't work until the trunk has completed it's closing procedures. Not cool when it's raining hard...

Trunk Trick--

I have had my car for a few years. The other night my 12 year old daughter asked me to drive a friend home. As I pulled up the girls ran out and my daughter's friend ran to the trunk to throw her bag in. Before I could push the trunk button she had it opened...did not know that you can open the trunk as long as the keys are in the car...my daughter's friend was raised in Germany and has ridden in Beemers her whole life and didnt think a thing of it! Funny!

Motion Detector. My wife asked to lock her in at the Target in our neighborhood while I went in to by some milk. When I came out 5 minutes later, the alarm was whistling and the lights flashing.

I asked if she tried to open the door and she said, "no I was just sitting here".

Goes to show that if a window is down or sunroof is open when the car is locked, someone reaching inside will trigger the alarm. I took a look in the car manual and confirmed it.

Click lock on the remote twice and the interior alarm is off. You can leave spouse or pets in the vehicle and lock the doors

Well my car doesn't tell me when the hood (bonnet) is open
Drained the battery the other day, so i pulled the hood lever then remembered i can just roll start it. I forgot i had pulled the lever and continued on to work. Nothing, no mention in idrive that it was open. Funny, because there is a little push button switch under the hood by the right side cabin filter that (i thought) would trigger something stating the hood wasnt closed. All the stuff idrive tells you, even if you have a fog light out, but it doesnt tell you if your hood is up

Guys, this is NOT safe... don't do it!

If you lock the car with the remote you cannot get out from the inside (ie. double-pull on the door handle won't work and central locking button won't work as the "anti-theft" system disables their functionality). If someone is going to stay in the car, they should lock it using the lock button on the dash only - as then they can get out in an emergency.

The representative said there is no such thing and not to lock anyone in the vehicle unless you leave the keyfob with those persons

If you forget to put the car in park and open the door, when you take you foot off the brake it will roll about 1 foot and put itself in park for you.

The car putting itself in park only works for LCI, with the electronic gearbox, I believe. Locking someone inside the car I believe you can get out by pushing the central locking button first and then pulling the door handle. I just learned today that if you have the light switch one click to the right from off, and try to lock the car it wont beep.

Automatic Transmission trick

Thanks to the poster for the "reset" procedure for the automatic tranny, wow, what a difference. I wonder if it also has an effect of the mapping for the sport setting?

Also, I am new here, thanks for the great site full of info! My thing I discovered is that the iphone 4s works well with the bluetooth and Siri as well. The special BMW cable for Iphone/Ipod is really worth it if you are going to stream any music to your car's stereo and it keeps it charged, really useful and worth it. I would like to know if anyone has the Iphone snap in module and what more does it give you besides the cradle? No one at my dealer (CANBEC) knew.

Thanks
Ziggy

On pre-LCI 5's with haptic feedback on the drive controller, when the car finally goes to sleep the drive controller knob free spins. Cleaning out the car for a while and noticed that.

Navigation voice control: Turning the volume nob (or volume up/down controls on steering wheel), while the navigation voice is speaking, will increase or decrease the voice volume (not the radio/CD volume). I use this feature all the time now if I need to increase the nav volume because my windows are down, etc...

Stability control: (As far as I can tell - based on driving reactions), the stability control will apply breaking pressure to any single wheel, as necessary when you enter a corner at a dangerously high speed. When driving in a "spirited" fashion, on downhill mountain roads, it's almost impossible to ruffle this car's composure. Given its substantial weight, I'm really impressed at how well this feature works. (545i).

One annoying feature which I think they solved on the newer idrive is the volume setting after a phone call.
Blasting some Coldplay on that Schweet Logic 7 system then I get a phone call. Cool, "Hello" I ask, and continue with the conversation. Once I hang up here comes the music blasting instantly scaring the crap out of me because i forgot it was soo loud. My buddy with an 11 X5d said his turns up gradually back to where it was giving you that split second to turn it down of need be.

I hit 147mph in my 535 sport, so at least it will go that fast without any intervention. Fast enough for me. (I was in 5th, and it had just shifted into 6th. Plenty left I would say!)

I discovered this forum after picking up my 07 550i. I've since been pleased to find this thread and have learned many things regarding options on my car that I was previously happily ignorant of!

My favorite surprise so far is punching DTC a couple of tea and driving in sport mode!

Cool

The previous owener spilled coffee on him or herself and it made its way into the electronics under seat...the seat finally broke down on my watch and despite being told it would be covered under the CPO warranty, after they opened her up and discovered the gunked wires...I had to shell out the cash to get the entire wiring harness replaced... I have since found dry coffee in the back seat, passager seat, driver arm rest and all over the ski bag for the trunk pass through. This guy had some major issues with keeping his coffee in his mug! Pun intended. Had a top down detail done on the car...its so fresh and so clean now!

Also had EVERY Indian restaurant in San Diego programmed into the Nav system with a womans name next to most of them...odd?
