2002 vs 2003?

Hey there,

I'm thinking about buying a 2002 or 2003 745Li. I've heard that the entry model had its fair share of problems in 2002, but I'm wondering is there a significant difference in the 2003 models? Did they fix all of the problems?

Your input would really help. Thanks

Search man search like the wind..... You will see that most recomond a 2004 or newer as the 02 & 03s have the most issues, right behind the 04, 05, 06, 07, 08, 09, and 10s LOL

They're both out of warranty so best bet is to find a really nice one that doesn't necessarily have to have low miles but has to be very well kept.

A 745 that has been maintained and had all the bugs worked out can be more reliable than a newer one.

Really low miles is potentially bad because the bugs might not all have been worked out yet.

Yeah, my step father had an 02 for a while and it was hellacious. He had so many problems that he finally just got a new one.

my 03 has been getting small things replaced here and there, getting quite annoying actually, since the warranty is about to expire

Honestly, all model years have their share of issues. I had a 2002 and like Seven11 said, little annoying things kept it going in the shop once a quarter. However, the real problems were worked out through software patches. All this said, get a new enough one that it comes with a BMW warranty.

I heard the stories about the 02 myself and I REALLY searched and came up with the build dates and cpo cars. If the car is an 02 made after 5/02, then most major issues were worked out. If it was or is a cpo car with warranty to 100k, then you have been blessed!
