Thanks again for this posting. I have transferred about 1,000 songs onto the car. The songs purchased on Itunes without DRM work just fine.

What Am I Missing?

I've got the '09 535i with Nav and IPOD. Is there any advantage to having music on the hard drive versus the IPOD? Assuming I'm ok with my IPOD storage size, what is the advantage of the internal hard drive for the entertainment function? I do believe the nav system may have more data, is that correct?

Hi,
I have used the "export" feature to backup the music data to my USB flash drive. Does anyone know how to read the music data now on my USB flash drive on a PC? Is there some particular software that I need to read the exported music data file?

Thanks in advance.

Kzang:

Thanks a ton for the very helpful info. Just got my 2010 550i 2 weeks ago and still trying to figure out all this stuff. You probably saved me 6 hours with your posts.

Cool So, now how do I get rid of the music

Kzang , I have read your post and you give some great information. My problem is I played around with the option of uploading music to my 2010 528i and now I have music on there Im not pleased with add to that the fact that the car often defaults to the downloaded music and thereby playing music Im not interested in at the time. I have 2 queries, first how do you get that music off the BMW and second how do you get the system to default to a source other than the downloaded music?

This post is super helpful but I did have a real dumb moment and for anyone else out there who is like me, this info may actually be helpful. There are 2 USB ports in my X3, one in what I call the "glovebox" which is located between the driver seat and the passenger seat and the other that I call the "dashboard" which is in front of the passenger seat. All this time I was trying to import music from the USB by plugging it into the glove box and I kept getting a message saying "Insert USB in glovebox interface." (or something like that). In conclusion, I believe if you want to import music on to the HDD of the car, you need to plug the USB into the dashboard USB port and not in the glovebox USB port. The glovebox USB port is good for listening to music on an iPod or USB but the dashboard port is where you want to plug your flash drive in to import music! *EMBARRASSED*

Glad I bumped into this thread. Dumb question for a non tech guy. Once the music is copied to the car's hard drive, are they orgainzed just as the iTune playlist or in some other order?

Thanks.

Unhappy Now I wish I would have chosen Navigation

Great thread regardless how old it is. I wish I would have known this 2 weeks ago before I pulled the trigger on my 2010 528i X.

Thanks for making this post. I just bought my '10 535i and I can not get this to work, even following your directions. I keep getting the Note: Please connect a USB drive to the USB port. Any suggestions?

Based on hitting options button in "import" screen, shows hard drive to be 12.5GB

I had to insert the flash drive with the car off and then insert the key to get it to work.

I really enjoy the Navigation system since it does come with the hard drive to store music. I already transfered many songs with CD's as well as songs on USB sticks which have the ability to store many songs. My transfers of the CD's and songs on the USB went really well, however, now I do not know what happened but the USB port in the glove box used to store music and the centre armrest USB port used to play music do not work. I cannot use them anymore, I have tried everything with the USB sticks, formatting them, formatting them in different formats, put songs with various formats; MP3, AAC, and WMA and nothing woks anymore.

I do not feel like leaving my car at the dealer for a whole day just for this problem. Does anyone know how I can fix this issue, is there a way to reinitiate or reboot the USB ports etc

Thanks!

Copy all music to Navigation System Harddrive

Hi,

I have just purchased a new Z4 and I want to copy all my music to the hard disk on the car.

Do you know if it is possible to do this with and external hard drive or does it have to be on a USB stick.

Also on the device you are copying from onto the car must the only files on that device be .mp3 files in the root directory?

Many Thanks
Andrew

Yup, need to be in MP3 file extension. I tried with them in mp4 format and they didn't copy. Just change the extension from mp4 to mp3 on your laptop and then re import.

Mein Auto: X3 & Z3
Even old dogs can learn from old tricks. My wife was never really interested in importing music to her 09 135i's HD so it sat unused. My 06 X3 had a Ipod adapter added at the dealer so I had an Ipod with about 5,000 songs setting in the glovebox for about 10 years of everyday use. When I picked up my new X4M40i I saw it had the ability to add to it's HD so I whittled down my music to just 2300 songs, and after a couple tries, got it to load OK. So then I decided to do the same for my wife's car. I checked the 135i's owners manual for instructions on loading music to the HD and it referred to a USB port and it pointed me to the one in, what I call, the glovebox and showed the "gloveox" in the lower level of the console and next to the External Device input. After 3 days of trying, looking at internet postings, etc., I still could not get it to load music. It would get to the part about putting the USB stick in, which I did in the only USB I knew of and then would do nothing as far as loading. It would play the music using the controls but not save it. I gave up after 3 days. Then I decided to internet search further and found mention about a USB port in the dashboard glovebox. Having looked at the owners manual on "importing music" this time I looked at "USB" and found that it showed another in the dashboard glove box. I got a flashlight an looked in the dashboard glovebox where the picture seemed to show it and didn't see one. Darn! I then put my head down to seat level and lo and behold, there was the USB in the very back of the dashboard glovebox in a place that you likely would not find unless you knew exactly where to look. After I plugged in the stick, it loaded the music. Success! One odd thing I did notice, out of earlier desperation I decided to try loading the music from my Ipod through the aux and USB in the console glovebox. Using the BMW tri wire plug, I plugged it in with my car in the position 1 (power on, motor off) setting. The dash lights immediately went off and a warning popped up saying I was drawing power with the motor off. It even set my clock back to zero. After starting the car, the power warning went off and I reset the clock. I think my battery might have been low after the couple of hours I had spent during the 3 days of trying to load the music and it hadn't been driven so I think all is well although my original battery may be in the twilight of it's career. I think the most important part of my "lesson" was don't give up. I also think many, like me think of the small lower "glovebox" in the console because it has a usb and the aux input as the one everybody means when they talk about the "glovebox" where you install the usb stick to download music. Just to make it very clear for any future readers, THE USB PORT NEEDED TO DOWNLOAD MUSIC INTO YOUR ONBOARD HARD DRIVE IS IN THE VERY BACK CORNER OF THE GLOVEBOX IN THE DASHBOAR, NOT THE USB PORT IN THE CONSOLE.
