Thanks again for this posting. I have transferred about 1,000 songs onto the car. The songs purchased on Itunes without DRM work just fine.

What Am I Missing?
I've got the '09 535i with Nav and IPOD. Is there any advantage to having music on the hard drive versus the IPOD? Assuming I'm ok with my IPOD storage size, what is the advantage of the internal hard drive for the entertainment function? I do believe the nav system may have more data, is that correct?

Hi,
I have used the "export" feature to backup the music data to my USB flash drive. Does anyone know how to read the music data now on my USB flash drive on a PC? Is there some particular software that I need to read the exported music data file? Thanks in advance. |

Kzang:
Thanks a ton for the very helpful info. Just got my 2010 550i 2 weeks ago and still trying to figure out all this stuff. You probably saved me 6 hours with your posts. |

This post is super helpful but I did have a real dumb moment and for anyone else out there who is like me, this info may actually be helpful. There are 2 USB ports in my X3, one in what I call the "glovebox" which is located between the driver seat and the passenger seat and the other that I call the "dashboard" which is in front of the passenger seat. All this time I was trying to import music from the USB by plugging it into the glove box and I kept getting a message saying "Insert USB in glovebox interface." (or something like that). In conclusion, I believe if you want to import music on to the HDD of the car, you need to plug the USB into the dashboard USB port and not in the glovebox USB port. The glovebox USB port is good for listening to music on an iPod or USB but the dashboard port is where you want to plug your flash drive in to import music! *EMBARRASSED*

Glad I bumped into this thread. Dumb question for a non tech guy. Once the music is copied to the car's hard drive, are they orgainzed just as the iTune playlist or in some other order?
Thanks. Last edited by bimmerguy288; 09-10-2012 at 11:16 AM. |

Great thread regardless how old it is. I wish I would have known this 2 weeks ago before I pulled the trigger on my 2010 528i X.

Thanks for making this post. I just bought my '10 535i and I can not get this to work, even following your directions. I keep getting the Note: Please connect a USB drive to the USB port. Any suggestions?

Based on hitting options button in "import" screen, shows hard drive to be 12.5GB

I had to insert the flash drive with the car off and then insert the key to get it to work.

I have encountered the same issue. Do I need a special adapter to transfer from iphone? I do have a Y adapter to play music from my iphone but I am unable to transfer music from iphone 4s to BMW hard drive. Any help advice is greatly appreciated. -RK |
