Hi,
Kevin from Albuquerque. I have reluctantly purchased a 1988 325is Automatic (red) with 84,000 miles that has been sitting in the sun for several years. The seller wanted 895 for it and I looked it over and decided it is a money pit. I told them I would give them 500.00 if no one else wanted it and they really wanted it out of the driveway as they live in a pretty posh area. As you know, 200, 500, 895, is just a number when you have no idea what is wrong with a car. It is pretty rough, but they tell me it starts, and runs fine for a few minutes until it over heats. In the trunk I found a thermostat so I figure they tried that first. My thought is that the head is bad and needs to be replaced. Carpet, seats, paint are rough but it is all complete and having been an AZ and NM car only NO rust means a lot. Having owned a 1967 2000 CS, a 1968 1600, a 1978 320 I, a 92 740 I, 97 530, 2000 525 I Wagon, 2001 525 I Wagon and a 2003 530 I, I know the potential for sinking money into a car and while I enjoy the tinkering, my wife just rolls her eyes whenever a new project comes home. besides the normal clean it up stuff where do you guys recommend I start with just having a driver that I can resell if a more exciting project comes along? I have been on quite a few BMW forums over the years but not the E 30. Any input or if you need a complete car for 525.00 (yea, a lot of profit, I know) and promise not send it to the crusher, let me know. Kevin smarternow@gmail.com |

Glad to see a top notch Forum for the BMW! I have a lot of experience with Corvettes and belong to the Corvette Forum... but this is my first BMW... an 07 X3. I like to do my own maintenance... have a big garage and lift to work under. I'll be asking questions from time to time. Looks like there's a lot of collective knowledge here! Thanks-

Hello all Bimmer lovers....i'm new to the world of BMW's. I've always been interested in Mercedes, but I'm learning more about other German cars. My son is a German major in College and the car of his dream is of course a Bimmer. I would like to buy him one to drive back and gorth from college, and his summer job.I have been looking at very used 3series. Prices ranging from 3,000 to 5,000. Miles from 87,000 to 138,000. My question is.....how old is too old? Can BMW's keep going and going? We don't need pretty, just reliable and a BMW.

![]() Hello, Have visited site a couple of times but today looked into ED possibility and learned a lot. Interested in a new 535i GT for ED perhaps. Looking forward to being part of the site and learning a lot. We have three BMW's. An '05 545i, sport packaged, '08 535xi and an '08 328i. My first was an "82 320i, then another 3er and a 2002 530i sport package. |

Newbie
Newbie here although I have paid through the nose at dealerships and BMW specialists shops for the past couple of years. Our 96 328i has ran 62000 miles from new and we are the second owners. I hope to be able to pick your brains on a few issues. PM

Thanks for responding. The top really needs replacing but - costs about $1200/$1300 that i snot in the budget.
The rear cover opens. I can manually retract (and replace) the top and then the cover will close. My wife can hear a "whirring" sound behind the drivers side rear quadrant - I presume the motor is just turning over. I need to know how to get into that area and either reset, or get the "motors syncronized/initialized". Don't think I am clever - I just read it five minutes ago in a pdf calledE36 CONVERTIBLE TOPS kindly supplied by a forum user. Hope this helps. Regards pM |

You Tube Video
Peter:
There is a video on You Tube that shows how to fix this and also one that shows you how to manually raise the top should the motor fail. Do a search on your model on You Tube and you will find answers to you problem. Hope this helps. AW4141 |

Thanks AW - excellent suggestion. Now I am back with a fully operating top - the car, not my head although that thought intrigues me!
Now all I need to do is get all my shocks done and my control arms/bushings. Easy stuff. Thanks again. PM |

doc
Stumbled on you when I was looking for my son a cd for his 2007 M5 navigation system. BMW die hard and now my son is one too. I have a 1994 325i conv with 150K miles. Been good to me all these years until I took it in to Passport BMW in MD. They have destroyed my very well maintained car. Anyone out there living in MD beware of Passport. My son has an M5 and he loves Russell BMW in MD.
So anyone out there with a 2007 M5 willing to burn a copy of his nav cd for me? |

Hi All,
It's been almost 6 months since I enjoyed driving my BMW 520i E28 1982. It was in a bad shape but now it is almost new. However, I have a bit of a problem in getting all the spare parts that I need as I am living in Ethiopia and there are very few 520i parts. Anyone who knows anything about 520i E28 1982, I would love to correspond with to enjoy my BMW. |
