I have decided to join because I've learned so much already about my x5 e53 from member threads, so thank you all. Bimmerfest is a wonderful site and the iPhone app is excellent.
I have owned my BMW X5 e53 2006 ($62000, 55k on clock, + $8000 to get paint protection, window tint, leather protection, nano wheel seal, iPod interface kit and a $3500 4 year Auto Assure Warranty which covers all parts) since October 2010 and it has been a joy. I love the comfortable drive, functions, suspension and ergonomics of the interior spaces. I thought it wise to purchase the warranty, as most X5s develop faults after 5 years. So far, I've had these problems: Leaking air pipe Hood cable slackening - needed to pull the hood lever twice to open hood Parking sensors dislodging from front and read fenders. But many of you have had more serious problems. I will tell you my story as time progresses. I bought an excellent manual for my car. Recommended money saver for simple DIY jobs, but to all you owners, I would advise against DIY repairs unless you are a trained mechanic. BMWs are very complex cars requiring the right tools, workshop and expertise for repair work. Never get your beema serviced by anyone else other than an Authorised BMW service agent. You can't skimp on service for these cars, otherwise serious problems will begin to manifest themselves. I look forward to hearing more of your stories and will keep you posted with my own. Hi, Ive been a follower and regular browser of the bimmer forums. I'm a tech in electrical & electronics engineering, just on a lower level and have a good way with DIGITAL CAMERA REPARES.
I push a 525i E34. Bought it from a guy who had packed it for a year because it couldn't start. tried a couple of mechanics on it - no luck, I bought it in that condition - NOT STARTING with an unknown problem, with encouragements from my brother. I also had it checked by some so called expert guy around who told me the computer had a problem. I removed it, went round trying to get ideas, we have a local Bimmer Service firm who prices are so exorbitant, they gave me a quot of about a 150 dollars, Deep down I knew the problem would cost me so much. So I lost more money on trying other cheaper guys who thought they could fix it. I placed the Computer back on the car, because I couldn't find answers. Something told me, this car's mine and I'll get it moving myself if every body fails. And that was the beginning of my little adventure on 5 series. So I took off to the forums and experienced the unbelievable. I downloaded wiring diagrams and studied them carefully. There was no spark on all the spark plugs and I tracked down the lines. I m technical already so I know alot about sensors so I thought of beginning by test them - one by one. Guess what? it took me a week to finally learn that the little sensor just under the engine fun was not working, went round with it, was told it's a CRANK SHAFT SENSOR. Got one at only 28 dollars, fitted it and tried starting the car, we had to stand about 4 meters away from the car because it was covered by a lot of dust from the running engine. me & my brother we are a great team.
