Deposit to pre-order 2010 3-series?

Looking to order a 2010 3-series for ED.

Is a deposit required before the spot is allocated? What's a reasonable deposit if so and is it refundable if the lease offers turn out to be unfavorable?

My understanding is that your deposit is not something they can legally keep from you if you decide the deal goes south. However, my guess is that a dealer will be a bit pissed if you put an order on the car and then decide not to take it, since then he has it on his hands and needs to sell it.

I guess the difference here is whether you put a deposit on a vehicle built to your specifications or to dealer specifications that you have first dibs on.
