Broken Hood Latch Cable.

MY son snapped the hood latch cable on his '88 E30. I spent some time this morning under neath nd peering theu the grille, but can't seem to locate a way to undo the hood latch from outside. I know I'm probably just missing something obvious, but I'd sure be appreciative if somebody could let me know hos to get the hood open fromthe outside.

thanks

Robb

you can access the lock mechanism behind the driver's side light. The two bolts to the left hold the lock. Take the clips off the top of the plastic light grill and the two screws toward the bottom. It may be difficult getting the top clips off without the hood open but take the screws out and gently pry down on the top.

Use a flashlight to locate the latch on the driver's side behind the grille. Take a long flat blade screwdriver. Insert it between the fins in the grille, into the opening in the front of the hood latch and turn. may take a couple of tries at first, but it'll pop open.

You don't have to remove the grille.

any way to replace this or to put tension back in the line without buying a new latch?

make sure your cable is actually snapped. Take the hood opening mechanism (inside the car) off (2 bolts) and see if it is still attached. Mine was just stretched or part of the mechanism was shot. now I just leave it dangling and give it a good pull and she opens up just fine.

the ball snapped off mine (where the cable is attached too the handle) so i think i will just replace the cable instead of rigging it.
