Mein Auto:
I have same question. Today, I put it on my x5 (year 2002) without verifying. Bottle says it can use for BMW , Volkswagen and Mercedes.

Does any one has any information whether can we use castrol with edge sae 5w-40 instead of castrol sae 5w-40 for X5.

Castrol European formula - yes.... Castrol "std" probably is ok but I would put it in as formulation is different than BMW 5W30
I use Mobil 1 0w40 which is BMW approved LL1 oil

I go by this...from the owners manual...I find it easy to understand. The BMWusa.com website or the toll free customer number will get you a list of BMW approved (recommended) oil brands...or look for the Euro spec oils that are BMW LL-01 approved.

But I'm sure you can do like many BMW owners who use the full synthetic oil of their choice in an 0W40 or 5W30 viscosity plus an intermediate oil change (meaning a shorter interval than the SI display lights indicate). Some even use conventional "dino" oil...but also use a VERY short change interval or 2k-3k miles.

Most Walmarts carry the Euro Spec Mobil 1 0W-40 oil in quarts & 5 qt jugs...if yours don't...ask for it.
