How to turn off the auto dimming rear view mirror?

You can't turn it off but others have devised devices to cover the sensor which is near the top of the mirror at the center.

+1, you can't turn it off without rigging something.

Yeah! Good luck with trying to turn it off. I couldn't believe the first night I had the 328i out. It was like something from the Twilight Zone. All I could see in the mirrors was car shadows and headlights.

what the? lol...

If you haven't had one before it might take some getting used to, but its one of the best improvements to night driving since halogen lights. I can't fathom why you'd want it off. I was very happy to get outside auto-dimming mirrors so I don't have to cover the reflection from frickin SUVs behind me anymore!

Fixed.

But otherwise +1. I love how all 3 are auto-dimming, and how BMW thought to disable auto-dim when you put the car into reverse. I only wish there were separate sensors in the exterior mirrors (all 3 mirrors dim based on the inside mirror's light sensors).

I like the feature too but there are some times that I don't want it. I can't believe that BMW did not incorporate a defeat switch. I made a device that can block the sensor when I want the feature defeated.

Hey BMW:

If you guys ever read these posts, please get rid of the auto-dimming. It's bloody dangerous out there at night when the cars behind me look like they are creeping through the London fog in a bloody Sherlock Holmes movie!

Let the folks who want it pay for it separately like the strictly for poseurs, adaptive steering, another one of your giant steps away from driving purity.

How about concentrating on making driving fun again, like you did with the 2002; remember?

We don't need all of these gimmicks!!

Hint: You guys now have me looking at Porsches.

Your friend,

hpowders

PS-The 3 Series is 500-600 pounds too heavy to be taken seriously as an agile sports sedan anymore. You can feel it on every turn. How about trimming some of the fat?

They should make an "off" switch for them. They do in Audis

You wouldn't need a defeat device if you just drove in reverse when you don't want auto dimming.

How is that dangerous? Do you really need to see anything other than the position of the cars behind you? And how....might I ask....is looking at dim lights more dangerous than looking at blinding bright lights? You cant see ANYTHING out of a standard mirror at night...its like looking into the freaking sun!

I agree. Not sure I get the point either. Seems this technology is pretty standard in most cars these days. My last 4 cars (2 of which were BMW's) all had this technology. Personally, I prefer it and would expect it in a BMW. Especially when some stupid-a$$ lifted pick up gets behind me.

They ABSOLUTELY need an "off" switch for the auto-dimming mirrors.

First off, they are SO effective, that sometimes I can't tell if there is a car close, because the headlights are so dimmed.

Secondly, I can't tell if there is a cop trying to sneak up on me.

Hey, I LIKE living in the Twilight Zone!

But sometimes it gets old to have to constantly wear the aluminum foil over my head to stop them from reading my thoughts...

I really don't understand some of these posts. There are some people (myself included) who in certain situations prefer driving without the auto dimming feature. BMW needs to put a friggin defeat switch on that feature. Just because you think it is fine the way it is it doesn't mean every else is supposed to.

Please expain the down side of having a switch that defeats this feature.

None. If you read my post, you should have noticed that I was agreeing with the person above me (dannyc9997) whom I quoted. He was responding to someone who said they wanted to get rid of auto-dimming. I was agreeing with Danny.. that I liked the feature and expected it. You can have a switch, I don't care. I just like the feature.

Thanks for clarifying. I like the feature as well and do not advocate getting rid of it. I just want to be able to defeat it. I improvised a simple device that lets me do exactly that and I have no issues with it.

I agree that a defeat switch is an oversight. I've had this feature on my Acuras and although I would never turn it off because I love it, I can imagine there may be instances in which defeating could be advantageous. I can't imagine the cost for such a switch would add that much to the option, and then you cover everyone's preferences.

I'll trade you my manual one. Twist the clown nose and it dims. Twist the nose again, no dim.
