You might disapprove of this...

...unless you're a youth sports soccer coach who gets his attitude from Zidane during the World Cup. One of these schools was my rival during high school.

Quote:
SALT LAKE CITY - Shocking video of high school sportsmanship at its worst has recently come to light, showing an East High player taking a knee to a Woods Cross player's face.

This incident happened about two weeks ago, but the video is just now coming to light. The parents of the player who was kneed in the face say behavior like this needs to be stopped.

KSL talked with East High's principal, the athletic director at Woods Cross, and the Utah High School Athletic Association, and everyone agrees that the actions of East High player are unacceptable and dangerous.

The video shows Woods Cross soccer game against East High School on Sept. 27. Makenzie Clark of Woods Cross, No. 12 in blue, goes for the ball, rolls her ankle, then tumbles to the ground on all fours in front of East High's No. 12. The East High player takes a step back, then forward and pulls her knee into Clark's face.

I really don't get your thread title... are you implying that some here would approve of poor sportsmanship??!?

and cmon - was she red-carded? Yellow-carded? Pulled by her coach? Barred from school sports?!!? What??!?!

I did some digging - the ball wasn't in play and it wasn't noticed...

East High School's principal, athletic director and coach are discussing the player's actions. She will likely face consequences for the incident.

The Utah High School Activities Association is also investigating the dirty shot.
stay tuned I guess... but given the twitter feed of this young "lady"... she has some idiots posting there...

Not sure how that matters here? Hmmmm...

I didn't see those tweets though - I still don't know how twitter works But wow. There was another incident a week or two ago in Utah where a coach for a 7th ish grade football team supposedly stopped a game winning touchdown by the other team when he stepped onto the field and pushed the kid with the ball down. The kid got a concussion, the coach was arrested. Lately, I'm not sure what's going on with that one though.

As a parent who is actively involved in sports myself as well as my children's sports, I can say from the view of a sideline photographer/videographer that too many parents are on the edge of hysterically obsessed with their kids "winning" be it a one on one battle against an opponent or the game.

I've witnessed things over the years that appalled me to the point where I have confronted parents of the ethical standards (or lack thereof) that they are teaching their children. One of the worst was a coach for the Sumner Wolfpack Junior football team who in front of 45 players all aged roughly 9-10 years old went out onto the field of play to physically confront a referee on what he considered a bad call. It took his assitant coaches to pull him off the field before a physical confrontation began, and the police were called to escort the head coach off the field. Nice lesson he displayed that day.

As a soccer parent, I've seen the best and the worst from other parents. It really is unfortunate that the kids sometimes pick up the worst.

the gist of those tweets are that she is tongan (poly - as in polynesian) - the girls tweeting to her are saying that Utah girls soccer would be nothing without girls of her ethnic background, and that she is "gangsta" - basically a bunch of teenage girls saying "you go gurl!" - and my point being that because she took time to actually re-tweet them, that she agrees with these girls sentiments... ie, that just because she apologized, it obviously had nothing to do with how she was really feeling.

Can't wait to read that she's crossed the wrong street kid and got her teeth knocked out - seems like it is an event that is going to happen at some time or another in the coming years... taking a cheap shot at another girl on the ground and in a sporting event is cowardly, not tough.

just saying - these little girls think they're big and bad until someone who really is teaches them a lesson, messes up their hair/face/whatever... silly little high-school girls think they're tough... oh well... I just hope the tweets and that they have all been re-tweeted by the original account owner makes it to the school and the sports people who oversee her future in the sport... she doesn't deserve to move on in HS girls soccer imo.

Psycho sports parents have been around for a long time. I saw stuff like this when I played as a kid, over 30 years ago. We were blessed back then in not having video cameras and social media to amplify the bad situations.

Personally, if my kid had been kneed in the face, I'd call the cops right then (especially if I had it on video) and want the kid arrested. That'd be the better solution compared with starting a brawl.

The funny thing is that Woods Cross, Utah is NO WHERE NEAR anything ghetto/gangster/LA. Sure, there are train tracks and refineries there, and crime and drug use might be a tad bit higher there than other peaceful towns around it, but it's really not a bad place. Not sure where these girls get all that from (maybe it's the school janitor at Woods Cross High, he looks like Billy Gibbons).

I have noticed that even in nicer neighborhoods, there are often kids from decent families who like to "play gangsta" - and that's all well and good until they meet someone who REALLY IS STREET TOUGH - I've seen so-called tough-kids go running back to mommy and daddy when their nose gets bloodied, or their iphone gets stolen because they really CAN'T stand up to someone who has a lot less to lose than they do.

There is "playing tough", and there is "really tough". I happen to think these little punks are just "playing tough".... they do seem to have a "poly" or "tongan" clique going on via their tweets and their profile pics...

You're right, and you summed up this area perfectly. I never was a wanna-be gangster or anything....I guess I was smart enough not to even act like one!
