8.5" Wheels - will they fit?

I have been given some BMW 17" rims I would like to use on my X3 for winter snows. Does anyone know if they will fit? 17x8.5, 5 bolt, style #23M, part#ALY59231U10
they came off a 01 Z3 (E36)
If so I plan to use 235/55R17 tires - correct?

Those style 23M M-Contour wheels are from an E36 M3 or Z3 and are the rears. The fronts are 7.5 wide. (That part number is not a BMW part number, though.) Are you sure you have four identical wheels? It is not too uncommon to see E36s run rears all-around.

The BMW part number is 36 11 2 227 995

Anyway, I'm thinking they will probably fit. The bolt pattern is fine -- all recent BMWs are the same there. The offset of the 23Ms is 41mm and the X3 uses 47mm with an 8-incher. However, if these freebies are replicas, I suppose it is possible the offset will differ from OE and that could cause fit problems.

Yep, 235/55R-17.

Post pics once your winters are on. I had a set of M Contours on my '98 m3 and even had a set of M Contour replicas that I had winter tires on. I think they should look good!

Thanks

Larry,

Thank you for the info. The part number I found on a web site for a wheel that matched the design and dimensions. Fortunately, I do have 4 matching rims. I will post a pic when they are on.
Jeff

I just noticed the 'Vermont' part. If you drive in serious snow you might consider a 215/60R-17 if you can find a suitable winter tire in that size. I'm looking at a set of snows soon and seem to remember that pickings are slimmer in the 215 but I'm just sayin'...

But on an 8.5" wide rim, I think vtresch will have to go with at least 235/55's to remain within recommended fitment spec.

Even those will leave the rim a bit more vulnerable to scrapes than you might like.
