Did you receive the N54 HPFP warranty letter from BMW?
According to emmision rules BMW is supposed to send this below letter to every N54 engine BMW owner:
http://www.bmwtis.com/tsb/attachment...mer_Letter.pdf Did you get yours? ---------------------------------------------------- Customer Name: Address: Vehicle Chassis Number: Dear Valued Customer, BMW is committed to delivering the ultimate in product satisfaction to you, our customer. Our interest in your vehicle doesn't stop with its sale; rather, it continues throughout the vehicle's warranty period and beyond. BMW has become aware of a potential problem that could affect the durability of the high-pressure fuel pump of certain MY 2007/2008 BMW automobiles equipped with a 3.0 liter engine. We estimate that only a small percentage of vehicles will actually develop a problem. Vehicles affected may have the Service Engine Soon lamp illuminated. Also, the affected vehicles may experience an extended engine starting time ("long crank***8221 or reduced engine performance when the high-pressure fuel pump malfunctions. As a commitment to our customers and to demonstrate our confidence in our product, BMW will extend the emissions warranty for the high-pressure fuel pump to 10 years or 120,000 miles, whichever comes first. The emissions warranty extension for this component applies to your vehicle and is transferable to any subsequent purchaser of your car. All terms and conditions of the California Emissions Warranty, the Federal Emissions Defect Warranty, and the Federal Emissions Performance Warranty apply to the extended warranty. Warranty coverage for all other parts is not affected. Warranty terms and conditions can be found in your warranty booklet. The integrity of our products has been essential to our reputation, our success, and our customer's trust. We hope this extension of the emissions warranty will further enhance your ownership experience and satisfaction. Should you have any questions, please call us toll-free at 1-800-831-1117. In the unlikely event that the high-pressure fuel pump of your vehicle shows the above symptoms or any other problem, please feel free to call the nearest authorized BMW dealer for an appointment. All authorized BMW dealers will be informed of this warranty extension via a Service Information bulletin. Please be assured that we at BMW are totally committed to the highest standards of product excellence and owner experience, and are determined to maintain a level of service that exceeds your expectations. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. Sincerely,

No, the N52's (325i/328i/330i) don't have one - it's only on direct injection engines like the N54.
To the OP, yes I received the letter.

Note:
BMW has become aware of a potential problem that could affect the durability of the high-pressure fuel pump of certain MY 2007/2008 BMW automobiles equipped with a 3.0 liter engine. I don't think these are going out the MY2009 owners. Thought it doesn't appear that MY2009/N54 vehicles are immune to this problem. I predict that eventually MY2009 will be included, but for now they are not. |

BMW should reveal the actual % of 2007-2008 vehicles already affected so potential consumers (certainly not I) interested in buying a 135i, 335i or 535i can determine what a projection of "a small percentage" actually means. The letter is deliberately too vague. What do they have to hide?

If only a very small % of consumers have had problems, they never would have issued this letter. In fact the HPFP issue seems to be significant. BMW doesn't issue a letter like this unless the problem is a bit more pervasive than they are alluding too.

It looks like we will probably never know, but I can't see BMW writing that letter unless the problem is significant. 30-40% would be "alarming."

Sorry to hear that. Hope that's the end of it. Enjoy your vehicle.

No HPFP, no worries also.
"Long crank" is what the ladies call me, but it has nothing to do with my car.

Who gives a sh*t, so you take it in to service and get it replaced. I'm not planning on keeping any car for over 120k miles so it's not an issue. It's a WARRANTY COVERED REPLACEMENT, that just got extended from 50k to 125k. Stop panicking it's really not a big deal.. And HPowders, You should have just bought a 335i.. Worst case scenario is that you get a loaner for 2 days and then have a perfectly good HPFP. You would actually spend a lot less time dealing with the HPFP replacement, then you do complaining about the 335i.

Edit: And also, I think people should continue to complain. Why? Because I don't think BMW is revealing what they know. If BMW took so long to admit the HPFP issues, how can we trust BMW to not reveal something else may be wrong? As someone else mentioned, do we really need someone to die before BMW decides to spill the beans? Last edited by TofuTurkey; 09-02-2009 at 01:01 PM. |

Pleasure to read your intelligent letter.
Once again, I do not want a 335i. I don't need the temptation to be ticketed for speeding. I go fast enough in the 328i. The 335i would put me over the top. I couldn't handle it. I'm not that disciplined.

The other reason we joke about this is that some people feel that their 335 is some sort of supercar, despite the fact it has 20% less peak power than a 2010 Ford Taurus, which could handily leave you in the dust. What's that? You got it for the handling? Well, the '28 has that too. So does the 323. So does the 318. They are all very nice cars. It is not just a knock on the car -- we are making fun of people that take themselves too seriously.
