2008 X3 engine "ticking"

Just noticed today that I have a ticking noise coming from the engine. Hadn't heard it before. Had the car state inspected yesterday and they did an emission test on it. Could that have caused something?? Anyone else have a ticking on an X3?

Common, but maybe not as serious as you might think.

X3 Ticking

My X3 got a new cylinder head for the ticking. Just bought an 07 CPO, got the new cylinder head a month later under warrenty. Dealer said, 'this is a BMW, it shouldn't sound like that".

My 2008 X3 3.0si occasionally experienced this ticking issue. My dealership performed the bleeding process as detailed in the link to the e90 non-turbo engine discussion.

It appears that this bleeding process worked to remedy the problem for my car. The SA did mention that the ticking problem tends to occur when the SAV is frequently driven less than 10 miles at a time.

Good points thank you. Mine does this occasionlly and then straigtens itself out. It seems to track with the short vs long driving. I thought it was the valve on the exhaust. This makes more sense.

I'll have them take a look.

This is interesting...I did not notice any ticking on my X3 until about a month ago. I was SURE it was a valve. Took it to the dealer, and they couldn't find any problems.

Just the other day, I noticed that I can still hear the ticking (although much softer) just after the car is turned OFF. Try it and see if you can still hear a faint version of the same tick as soon as you shut the car off.

Honestly, I am not terribly annoyed by it, but I am still curious on its origin. Right now, my theory is that it is related to climate control--After the car is off, I can hear the ticking most clearly through the dash console vents. And I've noticed I don't tend to hear the ticking when I haven't used either the AC or the heater for an extended period.

Weird. I have yet to hear any ticking from my older X3 or even my mother's 325i with the N52 motor. Apparently this is a normal issues with the N52 and the fixes are listed above.

Why don't I experience any of the ordinary problems?

Could be your lifters. Try a half-liter of a good synthetic motor oil in each ear and report back if that helped.

Wow, the ticking is gone!

Unfortunately, my hair looks like it did when I was a kid with the greasy kid stuff!

My bad! Forgot to mention the hair thing. Gasoline or kerosene can be used to get the oil out of your hair, but may have disadvantages as well...

Hey, my ticking is gone, too! But now I hear voices in my head instead. They keep saying "Go check out the new GLK...."

Just kidding. Still love the X3.

I don't know.... I read about all these issues: auto trans, ticking engines, X3's with bouncy rides, transfer case failures....Makes me wish I had rethought my purchases last year. It may be back to Lexus-ville for me if I start to have issues too.

the X3 wasn't designed with a "check" valve to keep the oil from draining down from the valve lifters when the vehicle sits for awhile - they become a little dry and you hear the "ticking" until the oil gets pumped back up - BMW knows about it and other models have the same design - the ticking is annoying but maybe the BMW engineers have a reason for this design ?

Well, it seems the ticking is back. And this is right after the sav went in for its 30k checkup. If they can't get it right this time is there a TSB for replacing the head? Or has that just worked for some.

I purposely drove the 30 something miles to work at an average of 70 mph and it is still there so didnt go away as it has in the past.

Just when I settle in to be happy with the vehicle it throws a fit.

Brought in in yesterday and they said that BMWNA has agreed to replace the heads, but they are back ordered due to a high demand for this problem.

My suggestion is to get in line before your warranty runs out.

Thanks for the reminder. I have the workslip in my glove box, and keep meaning to check if it has any notations.

I can tell you that my SA said that BMWNA has agreed that this is a problem and to take care of it.

The way I got them to address it right away was to take a 30 second video with my phone. There was no side stepping with, "Thats they way they all sound" garbage. They knew I would have demanded them to pull one around and show me.

I am scheduled for a new head replacement under warr. If you are still covered take a video with sound. Then go to dealer. There is a tab that covers this.

Evl,

Just wondering, have you previously had the bleeding procedure done or the hydraulic valve lifters replaced according to SIB 11 09 07? From my research, it appears that the dealers typically try to resolve the ticking problem with either of these methods first, andthen if these methods don't work, head replacement is the last alternative. Even then, the head replacement alternative is usually only approved if the dealer submits a PUMA case or you obtain approval from the regional rep. In other words, one has to really push and fight to get the head replacement.

Yes they tried that and my SA tells me that BMWNA has finally recognized this for the real problem it is.

Hence the reason for back ordered parts. I have noticed over the years that BMWNA holds the purse strings on all repairs and makes the dealer take the hits for owner's being upset.

Best thing to do is give the dealer the ammo they need to get BMWNA to pay for problems.

Otherwise you get the response, "All BMW's Do that" , "It must be your driving", or the famous, "We have never seen that before".

I think it's on a standard check list.

Good Luck!

Got my MT 08 back today and attached is what they did. I noticed an immediate difference in not only the sound of the engine, but its performance.

Much smoother acceleration in all gears. So its not just an annoying sound. It affects the performance as well.

I was told that BMWNA is finally recognizing it as a problem, and the standard answer of they all sound that way has been dropped. Make sure to get a video with audio (smart phones are awesome for this). This will allow them to respond to BMWNA's quick denial and actually get this fixed.

Hope this helps for all those getting a BS answer or the run around.

NO they are NOT supposed to sound that way.
