Cluster Failure

I have just aquired a 93 325i and the instrument cluster is not working correctly. I have searched many forums and search engines and have only come up with having to buy a new cluster. The odometer reads PPPPPP and the only gauge that works is the speedometer(which I'm fairly sure is reading wrong). All the lights work. This forum looks to have the biggest user base so I figured this would be the best place to ask. Is there a repair for this cluster I can do myself? I have no problem soldering or replacing components of the pcb inside the cluster. I removed the cluster, but couldnt get the backing plate loose from it(didn't try very hard either). Anyone here ever repaired one with this problem or do I need to just bite the bullet and buy another?
