High pitch moonroof noise

I have a 2006 X3 with around 76,000 and no previous moonroof problems. Today while driving with all parts of the moonroof closed, I started to hear a high pitched whistle over the sound of my stereo. I turned off the stereo and the high pitch whine was very noticeable. I opened the inner roof, and it was much louder. Air was coming in somehow and when I pressed the button to tilt the roof open the sound went away. I am taking it to the dealer on Thursday to see what is going on, but I wanted to see if anyone has seen a similar issue. I can't drive the car without opening the inner roof and tilting the moonroof open or else the noise is just too loud and annoying.

No similar issues. It sounds like you have a bad seal somewhere in the roof cassette.

Interesting. I have a high pitched whine coming from just above my rear view mirror at speeds of about 80mph. I'd take it into the dealer but it's intermittent and you know how the dealer is about intermittent problems -- reproducibility is always a challenge. There's no water leak (been through two auto car washes recently) and replacing a windshield is tricky.

My whine (very much like wind going over a taut piece of paper, or a woodwind reed) occurs whether or not the sunroof is open, vented, or closed, I think. I'll keep an eye on it to see if it occurs more when the roof is in one position or another.

Thumbs down

Don't have the whine but do have a vibration when either the one or two glass panels are open doing 65+mph with the windows partially open. This only started happening at about 30,000 miles on the X3. Sounds like the two glass panels are hitting together. Taking it to the dealer to get fixed.
