E30 (1982 - 1993)
God's Chariot. The E30 was produced primarily from 1982 through 1991. The cabriolet was the one exception which was produced through 1993.

M42 motor mounts

Hi all,

I've got a very noisy '91 318ic. I thought the problem was the exhaust so I just replaced it. I don't think I'm 1 decibel quieter now than I was before!@#$% The guy changing the exhaust said it might be my motor mounts. They look ok to me, but one looks fatter? than the other. Any suggestions? These things run about a hundred bucks each so after $400 on a new exhaust that I didn't need, I'd sure like to avoid new mounts that I don't need either. Your wealth of experience is appreciated.

Thanks,

Bob Kopicki

The passenger side is normally the side that goes first due to the heat from engine and headers. You can try changing out one. As an upgrade you can swap over to the late e28 535i mount like I did. It will make the engine stiffer but also increase in cabin vibration. I guess you want it quieter, so would not recommend that route.

The M42 have specific hydraulic (liquid filled) mounts. Thats why they are so expenice. Regular e30 mounts won't work.

Yes, my car does vibrate quite a lot and the engine is running great, so my assumption is that it's gotta be the mounts. I'm guessing the noise and vibration is due to the degraded mounts and I'd like to smooth and quiet down the car. Thanks for the advice, I'll probably purchase the mounts today.
