325i 1989 - Battery indicator light up

Hi there, I am a proud "new" owner of a 1989 325i. I was really enjoying the car until I left the lights on and my battery dried up. I tried to recharge the battery with a jumper but ohh! lord, big mistake the poles in my BMW were not in the same position as I was used to. Obviously, the car did not start.

I recharged the battery and installed it back and the car started smoothly. However, now when I turn off the car the battery indicator comes up and stays on. I left the car for a couple of hours hoping that the indicator will go off but that was not the case.

Does anybody knows what is wrong or why the battery indicator goes on after the engine is turn off?

I am afraid I did so, do you have any idea what is the most common part that gets damaged because of this ? I am reluctant to take it to a repair show, I want to show off fixing it myself (I hope)....

technically, everything should run even on reverse polarity, but i dont know how that would work with 2 power sources. it shoulda just short circuited, but again 2 power sources. but if anything was effected, it would be the battery and alternator. i would reset the computer (24hour battery disconnect with key on "on "position), and if that doesnt fix it, i would start looking fdor fried wires. or pull the cluster and see if anything shorted in there

replace the battery. the components in the car should work fine as they would never have even known they were turned "on", because the battery would have shorted through the other battery. this battery to battery curcuit effectively infinity voltage and the jumper cables provide no resistance so humoungous current flows which your battery most probably cant handle. replace the battery. the car that was already running (the saviour for want of a better word) should be fine but that car may also have some problems now too.
