E30 (1982 - 1993)
God's Chariot. The E30 was produced primarily from 1982 through 1991. The cabriolet was the one exception which was produced through 1993. |

Noob to 325i
Okay,
I was driving near the beach here in south florida and saw a 1987 325i. It was in excellent condition from what could be scene with out lifting the hood or sitting inside. The paint was mint, and the seats looks okay although thtere were some tears in the leather. How much should I think about paying for a car like this IF its in excellent condition? They were asking 5700 USD for it. I am not sure if this is a rip off or what. I have seen others online for 2900 so i am not sure if that price is proper or not. Also are these cars in high demand? How much could I turn it around for later on? Also are there any publications which sell tuner aprts for these cars? if so any links would be greatly appreciated. The only reason I am even thinking about this car is one of my close friends is a mechanic at BMW and I figured he could help me really set this thing off. Any help would be appreciated. Preme |

At $5700 for an 87 you are probably going to take a loss. Unless it's absolutely perfect or a heavily modded car already where you don't need to put a dime into it.
Most E30 enthusiast want late model 89-91 325's for the face lifted body styling. I don't like the lowered rear arch, but most do. I have one of each. It was BMW's way of keeping the E30 in production longer until they had the M50 ready for production and the E36 finished. If you notice model years get shorter and shorter now due to computers... |

Depending on condition, mileage, and overall maintance history, you could pick up higher mileage E36 325is and maybe a 328is that has been in a fender bender. Use your local craigslist. It's a great source, the boards but most members want to recover cash they have in the car.
I got a 92 325iC with 106k on it. Had a lot of replaced parts but was running horrible due to the fan missing two blades next to each other and needed a valve adjustment. After I did that it ran great. I love that car, to bad the wife takes it daily to work now. Below is a pic of my current E30's in the US. |

I paid $3000 for my 88 325iS. Complete list of flaws: Missing iS lip, torn leather on seats (covered by seat covers), one foglight bulb burned out, and fluctuating idle that was fixed by cleaning the AFM. Except for the missing lip and the hood paint being a little dull the exterior is perfect. Except for the seat tears the interior is immaculate.
I figure I got lucky because I called the day the ad was placed (it was just listed as an 88 BMW iS, no 325 designation) and while I was the 3rd person to call about it, I was the first one not looking for an automatic.

The E30 is what all actual driving enthusiasts are after. It's an unpretentious machine, quietly capable of spectacular feats of handling. It's light, simple design is rugged enough to run against $400k rally cars, but on the street it' communicative chassis delights even the most disinterested driver. It really is one of the world's ultimate driving machines |
