The engine on the floor does not look very professional.

Sorry for the delayed update. It's been a crazy week. Still is. Will provide more details in another posting but here's the short story: Our X5 is back home. If anything happened to the transmission, it's not apparent to me. In fact, it's incredibly smooth in comparison to the jerky shifting I endured over the past five weeks in the loaner xDrive30i. Oh yeah... one difference--I can smell "new engine" in the garage after a drive!

There never was any doubt (to me) that the car would operate without issue upon return....

The question is what happens in 50k miles if you have a failure-

Good luck

Jerry-
congrats on getting 'er back on the road! Hopefully all of the handwringing going on here is for naught and you will continue to enjoy this fine machine.

thanks for keeping us updated.

P.S. did you work out any sort of extended powertrain warranty with them?

BMWNA is arranging for an extended warranty on the vehicle, six years/100,000 miles. Haven't yet received the paperwork but I understand this particular warranty is new and covers everything, including the iDrive. (I'm told that previous extended warranties didn't cover certain components.) The dealer and BMWNA are currently working out the details about how to internally charge/pay for the warranty.

I'm satisfied with the resolution. Too bad it took some raised voices to get there, but I guess that's just par for the course.

On another positive note, the dealer sent us a check for an amount equal to a monthly payment as a gesture of goodwill. Nice. This is a good example of why I drive out of my way to do business with them when other dealers are closer to home.

I'll post more details about the warranty when I receive it.

Way To Go, Jerry!

Very good job- this seems imminently appropriate from your (our?) perspective.

Give your SA a giftcard and say "take your wife/girlfriend/etc" out for lunch, or something. My guess is that they helped with BMWNA on this....

A

PS There are 3 different warranties- basic power train, gold and platinum. If they are giving you the top, great- if not maybe you can 'upgrade' with your own $...worth it IMHO

I agree.

They replaced the obviously busted engine and if there was any further damage, they will fix it for the next 6 yrs or 100,000mi. FWIW I would be satisfied with this resolution.
