98 540i P1384 Knock Sensor 3 Circuit
So I had codes for cat efficiency on both sides, as well as P1384. I was advised to start by replacing the cats, which I did. The "Knock Sensor 3 Circuit" code still pops up, but the good news is my cats are cool (yay).
I've done some searching around and can't seem to find a DIY or anything on replacing this sensor. I understand it's alleged to be a time consuming repair (which ain't a big deal to me). I've got more time than money, and have done most of the maintenance on the vehicle myself so far. That said, I'm sure you could imagine I'm all about dropping in an $80 part myself versus paying hourly labor. Anybody got a lead? Thanks!! |

THe knock sensors are under the intake manifold. There are four of them. They are apparently sensitive to orientation, as reported by at least one owner.
Good time to replace a bunch of gaskets, as well as the water pump (use a BMW gasket).

Thanks, that's what I've heard...
Have you (or anyone) seen a diagram or exploded view on how to get to the sensors? I really just want to make sure I only take apart what I need to... |

They're under the intake manifold. Get the Bentley's manual before you tear into this job.
This job is almost like being "a little bit pregnant".
