Coolant pipe job completed!

Ok fellas I'm finally done. I replaced the notorious coolant pipe w/o removing the motor or the heads and oil pan. I will tell you that it is very time consuming but it can be done.
i did have a couple of hiccups but the were resolved. A special thanks to KEIF and
BIGRAM67. I'm not a photographer but i did takes some pics. HOPE THIS HELPS.

it took me 7 days to complete it. I was very careful so i just took my time and did not rush. I saved my self $6000.00. The dealer wants around $6500 starting off.

why the hell you'd need to do the expansion tank ! ? It was a water leak ! not head gasket failure !

I just want to say you are the f'ing man for doing all this and for providing pictures so everyone else can see how you did it -- and to show that you can do it from the top without pulling the heads!

Did you have to do anything special to get the valley pan out without pulling the heads, or did it just slide out toward the front?

ONCE YOU REMOVE THE INTAKE THE VALLEY PAN IS RIGHT THERE. JUST REMOVE ALL THE BOLTS LIFT UP WHICH WILL EXPOSE THE COOLANT PIPE THAT SLIDES OUT FORWARD. YOU WILL HAVE TO REMOVE THE RADIATOR. HERE ARE OTHER PICS. THANKS GUYS FOR THE SUPPORT.

Wow, and I was all proud that I successfully changed my spark plugs! This is one major job that I wouldn't attempt.

what procedure did you use? did you follow steps from a BMW manual? how about any special tools that needed to be bought / rented?

If you get the time try and write up a list of tools needed, and the order of things you removed, etc. It would be great to look at the steps of the job and try to estimate repair time and space needed.

also you say it took you 7 days but that was just working a few hour each evening right? not 8 hours a day.

Once again, excellent work !

I see the difference from the rear crossover pipe on the E39 540i I had and this car is the pipe is now under the valley pan instead of on top of it.
My E39 had a leak at the rear crossover pipe and while I was in there I replaced the vally pan, rear vacuum plate, intake gaskets, etc. Here are two photos I took that are similar to yours. Also I did not need to remove the radiator from the car to do my repair. The E65 is more involved but can be tackled!
