Question 2004 330i Climate Control/Heater problem

Hi all, been a long time reader but this is my first post, so please excuse the noob.

I just bought a 2004 BMW 330i sedan in August. It currently has 52,100 miles. Here is my problem: I live near Washington DC and with this cold weather we've been having the last couple of days, I needed to turn the heat on in my car. No big deal. However, when I went to turn on the heat yesterday (I set the air temp to 84 degrees) when I cranked up the car, it only blew out cool air (guesstimating about 70 or so degrees) when I had the air set to come out of the main, face level air vents. I gave it plenty of time to warm up, drove the car about 10 minutes like this, no change. I switched so that the air was only coming out of the foot vents, and the air was hot. I then switched to the defroster, and again the air was hot. I then switched back to the face vents and the air cooled back down to 70 or so. There are no noises or dashboard warning lights giving me any clue as to what, if anything is broken.

It seems like the only problem is when I want hot air coming out of the main vents. I do not have a similar situation with the A/C, and this is really the first time I have used the heat since I bought the car. I looked on the wiki and tried a few searches for other postings on this, but did not find anything.

Any advice, suggestions, or obvious things I am overlooking? Appreciate the help!

An obvious thing would be the vertical rotary temp adjuster located between the two center vents. You will see blue dots indicating chilly air,and when moved shows red dots-warm air.Hopefully its as easy as that.
