Well, I ride pretty much year round except for December and January. Basically, if there's snow on the ground, the bike gets parked! However, cold is no reason not to.

My ride is a 2008 Kawasaki Concours 14 ABS... incredible year-round bike... but the gear you wear makes a HUGE difference. This morning it was 40 degrees here in St. Louis and I was quite comfy. I wear a Tourmaster Transition 2 jacket with the thermal liner in, Tourmaster Venture pants with the rain liner in (breathes but waterproof), Icon boots, Nolan N103 helmet and a "neck only balaclava" (can't think of any other way to describe it). I also have three pairs of gloves that I keep in my panniers; a pair of mesh gloves, a pair of waterproof lightly padded "fall" gloves, and a pair of heavily padded "arctic" gloves (almost ski gloves, but designed for riding).

This means that I have basically all the gear I need to ride from 12 degrees (coldest I've ridden) up to 85 degrees. I have a mesh jacket I switch to above about 75, but I have ridden the Transition up to 85 and been OK. Below about 35 I also put the thermal liner in my Venture pants, but generally I don't worry about it because the fairing on my bike protects well.

Now, note that below freezing I ride VERY conservatively because of the worry of black ice... and also around 25 or colder I probably wouldn't ride more than about 20 minutes or so before I'd need to warm up. I am considering a heated vest for the really cold days, but last year I didn't really need it. I AM though going to put heated grips on my bike this year!

It was 43 when I left home today.
Just jacket and gloves, open face helmet.

Don't be a girl.

Srsly though, I really do not like riding two wheels below 27 or so, esp since I commute around 0530 - dark.
Too much chance of hitting some black ice.

I'll commute in any weather with my sidecar rig, the colder the better - people really stare in Jan when it is in the teens.

The coldest I've riden in was 48 and I wore thermal under garments. It took me a couple hours to bring my core temp back up after that ride.
