2000 328i Oxygen Sensors

Hi all!

90,000 mile maintenance is coming up on my 2000 328i. I've contacted various shops in this area and they've told me various things about what to do with my oxygen sensors.

Three shops have told me to replace FOUR oxygen sensors.
The BMW dealership has told me that TWO oxygen sensors need replaced.

Price shop 1 for four oxygen sensors: $841 (labor incl.)
Price shop 2 for four oxygen sensors: $739 (labor incl.)
Price shop 2 for two oxygen sensors: $403 (labor incl.)

So here are the two questions of the day:

1. Do I need FOUR or TWO oxygen sensors replaced???
2. Are the prices reasonable or should I continue to shop around?

WOW! OUCH! The sensors are $55 each at autohausaz.com. The two "PRE CAT" sensors are the only ones I have changed in 200k miles on my car and she runs like a top. I also did a video DIY, it is so easy, ANYONE can do it themselves in 15 minutes. Seriously!

I believe the post-cat sensors only monitor catalytic converter efficiency and have no impact on performance/economy. They should throw a code if they go bad. Pre-cats could need replacing, and are probably the two the dealership is referring to. However i'm at 140k miles and i get about 29mpg most of the time with mostly highway miles, so i'm not sure if it's entirely necessary.

I wouldn't touch the post cats though.

Just buy two from autohausaz.com and do them yourself by using Smolcks vid.

I was told by Indy shop no need to replace if nothing is wrong. I have 155k and have the originals.

That is a long time. Mine went 120k before calling it quits and lighting my dash.

I'm at 90k and before I would get the code twice a month or so if I was in slow moving traffic.

Gotta keep those revs high!
