I ended up buying mine from New Haven BMW. I could not find my color used, I looked for three months.
I figured between shipping, hardware kit, and painting, the difference wasn't worth it to me to wait any longer.
Here is one in your color, I think.

Hardtop for a 1999 BMW Z-3. I bought it new with my car and used it for about 3 or 4 months. It's been in it's cover in my spare room every since. Sells for $2200 new, it's in like new condition and is dark gray.
Call 520 885 1096 or e-mail at j.risk@cox.net and ask for Jim

I HAVE OWNED THIS TOP FOR AS LONG AS I HAVE OWNED THE CAR, 8 YEARS, AND IT HAS NEVER LEFT THE GARAGE. IT IS IN NEW SHAPE, A LIGHT SILVER BLUE SAME AS THE CAR. NO NICKS SCRATCHES OR BUMPS. HAS THE ELECTRIC DEFROSTER IN THE REAR WINDOW. EASY TO PUT ON AND OFF. PERFECT CONDITION LASHED TO MY GARAGE WALL.

Just a note of caution on color, just in case you dont know, Your car is most likely Titanium Silver a color that was introduced around 2000 and replaced Artic Silver--if I recall correctly. They are close but not the same-- Artic Silver has more blue in it.

I know I spent a lot more then you would want, but it was nice to have everything I needed to do the job. Look how it was shipped from Germany hardly any packing just foam in four spots.
One thing you might want to checkout is, the label as shown in picture three. The top was made in USA and shipped to Germany .
Someone should call on that top for 800.00 no matter what the color is.

It seems like it is much easier to find Z3 hardtops than Z4 hardtops.

Hardtop

I emailed the guy (Jim) and he decided NOT to sell his hardtop....lives in Tucson, Az...don't know if that's the one you guys are talking about (who has the top for $800)?? Thanks for the info. regarding the difference in the silver colors...mine is definitely titanium metalic silver (same color as Desolationoverdrive's car). Just check the ID number on your car...should detect the exact color. It would be a miracle if I found a top to match the color of my car...most likely would need to get it repainted.

When you click on a link that is a email address, your web browser thinks you want to send that address an email. It then tries to open your email client so it can create a new email.

If you don't have an email client (outlook, outlook express, etc) installed, it doesn't know what to do and gives you that error. If you use yahoo, hotmail or some other web based email, you generally need to install their client like yahoo messenger so that the browser is "aware" of it. (http://email.about.com/od/yahoomailt...fault_mail.htm)

To see what internet explorer (windows based PCs) is currently using for its default mail client, you can open IE and click tools/options and click on the programs tab. Depending on the version there will be an option to change the default program. its very similar in Firefox and other browsers.

You can also install an email client like outlook express and it will generally make the settings change for you.

The other quick option is to not click the link but to simply copy the email address, start a new email in your usual mail client and paste the address in to the "To:" field

You can always do a search on the internet for that error message and you will find lots of good info and resolutions

Hope that made sense....
Chris

Thanks,
I completely restored both the Bridgeport and the Hardinge Lathe, stripped them both down until there was nothing left to take apart, replaced all bearing etc.) Painted them both with industrial paint as if they were cars.

Since you used to paint cars and have all those tools displayed (WOW!)... Does this mean that should I find a great deal on a hardtop and it needs painting...then I could stop by your garage and (1) have you paint it (2) install the hardware...and I'm good to go. Whatcha think???

How are you making out with those leads?
Too bad about the 800.00 one.

Used would of only made sense for me if I found one locally in my color.(my car has never had paint work and I wanted to keep it that way) Then I would still have to deal with getting the kit. I think I read somewhere its not available as a kit anymore only separate pieces, I never looked into it but maybe you should before you buy something.

Unfortunately, I cannot contact the seller on craigslist. See my earlier post regarding that. I missed a pristene one on ebay...silver gray, but willing to repaint it..$1276 was what it sold for... I am not in a hurry, so I'll keep looking until the right one comes along. Yes, I'll check on the mounting hardware kit and also the harness kit for the window defroster. No sense in putting the cart before the horse, hu?? Thanks for your follow-up. I'll keep everyone posted.

hardtop installation kit

Does anyone know where I can find the hardware mounting kit and defroster wiring needed for the installation of the top? My car has a power top if that makes any difference. Please advise. Thanks!

I was going to reply bite the bullet and get new, (comes with everything) but I see silver is no longer available. Price went down about a 100.00 since I bought mine in Sept. Green is the lowest price at 2665.00

You don't need the defroster wiring. It's already in your car.

When you mount the driver's side bracket, you'll unplug the hydraulic connection
and connect it to the bracket's wiring. You'll understand it better when you see it.

The defroster switch wiring is under your center console near the ebrake handle.

You can get the hardware mounting kit from your dealer as cheaply as anywhere else.

The mounting kit comes with the new hardtop from the dealer. If your car is an earlier model, you'll need to buy a different defroster switch.

Very nice! What sort of projects have you done with them?

Late this past summer, I had these benchtop CNC "teaching" machines fall into my lap; mill, lathe, computers, terminals, software, manuals and benches for each, all for a $100.00 donation (tax deductible too) to UT's Engineering Dept.

Oh you lucky son of a gun, You have the best set up there. You have 30K worth of equipment when new, and it all looks just like new. You must have thought you were dreaming when you were bringing that equipment into your shop- benches and all. WoW And you got all the tooling with it too. The smile has still got to be on your face.

What is extremely nice about those units is you only have to set it up to make one part, then you can make as many parts as you want all exactly the same, and all automatically.
That is my biggest problem, I'm by no means a machinist and have to make each part by hand and then try and sometimes fail to make exact copies. Just last weekend I wanted blind bolts for my front vanity plate, It took forever to get all four brass carriage bolts trimmed and tapered to look the same. ( I'm a little fussy)
If I had your equipment it would have been done in 5 mins while I sat and watched, with the biggest smile on my face. That is a great, great find.
Looks like you have everything working too!
