Steering wheel controls not working

Has anyone had an issue on their 7 series. the controls on my steering wheel sometimes do not work and other times it does.. its done it a few times. and im not sure on how to go about fixing it. could it be a fuse? or could it be a computer issue.

does anybody have any suggestions on resolving this issue before taking it to a dealer.

thanks i'd appreciate anybody with some ideas

i have a similiar problem i notices. sometimes when i press the volume button to lower the radio it triggers the phone system and ends up calling the last number i dialed. it hasnt been a big deal but im thinking that it would be a good idea to fix it.

if it was a fuse then it wouldn't work at all

cuz when fuse goes, it goes!

Bimmer5150: If you're lucky maybe it's just a loose connector or a wire shorting. Do the button blocks on both sides of the steering wheel not work, or just the left buttons or right buttons? Does the L/D or S/M/D button work correctly while the other buttons are not working? If both button blocks are not working but the shifting program button still works you might start by pulling any errors from the steering column modules -- a dealer thing. If only one button block is impacted then you might just have a loose connection in the steering wheel itself where the block connects to the module (or a wire between the two shorting to something it shouldn't be).

at first i thought it could be a fuse going out or something, because whenever it does go out nothing works or lights up on the steering wheel controls. and then the next time i get in it, it will work normally and all the steering wheels controls are lighted up orange again.

hi keif
thanks for the info that seems to make sense but where could i check for loose connectors, would it be directly on the steering wheel or somewhere down on the column? thanks for any help guys.

Make sure any fuses related to this are fully seated first -- get the low hanging fruit first. The connectors are behind the front cover on the steering wheel, but let me check wiring diagrams to see where it gets its power (maybe there is an easier place to check before the steering wheel -- to verify that power is getting to it consistently).

There is a 20A fuse in the glove box that leads to the steering column switch cluster then on to the steering wheel module. Do your turn signals work when the buttons stop working?

steering wheel controls

Any idea exactly where the 20 amp fuse is in the glove box?

My steering wheel controls do not work. Radio and Nav does not work either. NO POWER
