My 2008 has this problem. It's probably my only complaint about the X3 so far. I wish the door ajar indicator told me which door was ajar. It's almost always the hatch though.

I have a 2009 x3 and a 2004 x3 and they both work just like brand new.

I believe any required adjustment is made at the hinges, not at the latch itself.

Not sure it is a feasible DIY project without some guidelines.

Those under warranty should see what their dealer says about it.

Here's a quote from another forum discussing the same problem on X5's:

Subject: Get your Dealer to adjust the tailgate
Message: I had the same problem with my 4.6. In fact, the lights in the rear compartment would stay on after slamming the tailgate shut.
Took it to the Dealer and it took them about 15 mins to make some minor adjustments to the hinges. Problem solved.

Yes its a design oversight in X3 just like unlit rear window buttons, no rear ducts and probably many other things. According to Wikipedia MY 2004 did not even have the door ajar indicator (I haven't see a 04 myself). To come back to your issue though, if you see the door ajar light on dash, a quick look in rear view mirror to check if hatch lights are on will confirm if its hatch door or any other door.

Yeah, the 2004s didn't even have a door ajar indicator. You need to have a good ear or see the interior lights on to realise it. Oops.

I didn't realize it until AFTER (of course) I had bought the car but the 3's are apparently considered really down market from the 5's which are considered 'luxurious' by BMW.

That doesn't say anything about the price since a fully outfitted 3 can be quite expensive but it does explain a great deal about how the X3 doesn't have some of the features that have been in 5's for literally decades.

I just remembered a Nissan I had years and years ago. A panicked female voice came on whenever a door was left ajar. I thought (but can't remember for sure) that she would say if it was a front or rear door but not which side.

Well, that coming from someone who had 3-4 bimmers before this one does surprise me. Guess the time to research a car is before you sign on the dotted line.
