Diesel Particulate Filter Regeneration

Hello. I live in Nassau, Bahamas which is 7 miles x 21 miles. I imported a 2010 F01 730d M Sport from the UK. I notice the diesel particulate filter regenerating every couple of hundred miles. The F01 has mostly short trips at modest speeds. Every couple of weeks it will have a 20 mile trip including a 5-10 mile stretch where 60mph is maintained.

The F01 runs great. I notice the engine performance declines, a large amount of white smoke and the exhaust smells like oven cleaner for maybe 5 minutes every few hundred miles. I am assuming it is doing the diesel particulate filter regeneration.

There is not much in the Owner's Manual regarding this process. I have looked at realoem for a diagram of the exhaust system for my F01 - http://realoem.com/bmw/partgrp.do?mo...61&hg=18&fg=10

It shows a catalyser/diesel particulate filter. There doesn't appear to be any sensors to control the regeneration process such as pressure differential.

Two questions: what starts/stops the regeneration process - miles, time, etc. - on this euro spec engine? Is the white smoke (and lots of it) water vapour from the additional heat in the regeneration process?

Thanks, Peter._a_
