New 2010 X5 3d Speedometer shows low speed by 5 miles

Hello:

I have my new 2010 X5 3d for over a month now and soon after I had it I observed that everyone is going lot faster than before. Took me a while to realize that the speedometer is calibrated show speed less by approx 4-5 miles than actual. I call my dealership and they said BMW does this intentional so that people donít get lots of speeding tickets.

I have been driving for 25 years and believe it nor not I never got a speeding ticket. I like to know what "actual" speed I am travelling and manage it myself rather than BMW doing it for me.

Has anyone heard anything like that or my dealer is full of "you know what"

Thanks for responding.

Raul

All BMWs are this way and have been this way for awhile. The margin of error is approx +5km/h; laws in Europe strictly prohibit understating the speed so a lot of manufacturers play it on the safe side. There is nothing you can do about this.

Really? I checked with my collegue, she has a 2006 X3 and her speedometer is dead on accurate.

You think BMW started this more recently? Anyhow, I dont like it and would insist my dealer calibrate this right.

BMW Motorcycles have historically had very optimistic speedometers, e.g., my 1994 R1100GS shows 70 when it is going 61. Many people complain, but BMW only responds to the most persistent. That's why on my bike I ignore the speedometer and refer to my GPS, which is mounted on the bars.

what would this do to odometer read? I would think it might slightly understate it. If so, how is such legal?

Our '07 328iT speedo was consistently 3-4 mph LOW; our '10 X535d speedo is spot on. A function of factory location (Europe vs. USA)??

Sea Doom:

Are you in Europe? I am in US and wonder if this is a US only issue. Anyhow, I am going to persist they fix this. Not disclosed prior to sale and I would expect all instruments work as expected.

Mine is about 10% slow as well.. I wonder if since the speedometer is measuring 10% faster than you are going, is the odometer racking up miles 10% faster as well?!?!?

The vehicle knows the actual speed. Once you get into the diagnostic menus of the Board Computer, there are three speeds recorded: Displayed speed, actual speed, and cruise control speed (if active). Therefore the odometer is accurate.

My X3 is about +3 km/h with the factory wheel size.

It does not effect the odometer. The ECU knows the true speed and modifies the signal to the gauge cluster.

The 06 is not accurate either. BMW has been doing this for a long long time. There is nothing the dealer can do about it. I have gotten use to over the years and so has my wife. They set up those speed trailers all the time by me so i can check my spedometers. 25 is 24, 35 is actually 33 and 80 is 76. So knowing this we adjust our speed. In a couple weeks it won't bother you anymore.

Does any other manufacture do the same thing on speedometers?

Most of them do, it's just that BMW seems to take it to an extreme, relatively speaking.

It's been going on for YEARS w/ BMW's. All three of mine do the exact same thing. The way I see it, is I do 5 over based on the speedo, I'm actually only doing about 3-4 over, so I'm "speeding" w/o drawing attention to myself. If you wanna see an exact accurate reading, use the OBC as it reads correctly. Live w/ it or complain about it, either way there is nothing you can do it about.

On Board Computer...it should be in the same screens as the MPG, fuel range, etc.

I got an extension on my Honda civic's warrantee over this. Honda got sued for inaccurate odometer reading and lost. My experience was that it was usually about 10% off.

On Board Computer, and I am thinking you meant cruise speed that is displayed, because that is the only speed data that you get, it mirrors exactly whats on the speedometer.

Not much helpful - that one.

I have been driving 25 years, ZERO speeding tickets. But I dont like this as I dont know what is the actual speed I am travelling. Speedometer may show 75 and I would think oh, I must be at 67-69 and get pulled over. I am going to be contacting BMW and either they correct it or I am going to sell and never buy a BMW. Not to mention how much I love my X5 3d. Its sad they do this.

I have no other complaints to be picking from. It's important for me to be managing speeding tickets myself and not BMW do it for me. And I have been doing this successfuly - no speeding toicket ever and I fear now I am going to get one soon unless I drive like a moron under speed limits.

Like someone else said in a post, you spend 65k and the least you expect is get accurate instrument panels.
