Next Step in BMW For Me..

In About 6 months i will own my 2001 Z3C with 48000 miles on it. Less than a year ago I installed TCKR True Match S/A Coilover System( It handels Great), I also custom made a stereo system for my z3c. So i think i have 2 options. 1 kept it (because there were under 13000 made in the US) and supercharge it (VF) or 2. Sell it and by a 2008,2009 M3. Any Thoughts?

Most of "us" that move from the Z3 or M Coupe/Rdstr to an M3 usually move back to the Z3M within about one (1) year.

Might as well save yourself the trouble.

The Z3 Coupe is more rare (I think) than the M Coupe (when the S-52/S-54 are combined); there were roughly ten (10) M Rdstrs made to every M Coupe, but I never did the math on the Z3 versions, likely even fewer Coupes to Rdstrs.

Keep it, and supercharge it. There's a guy a little ways East of you that has done LOTS of forced induction installations, and has a nice little package to keep the rearend together too...

There is a pretty clear trend regarding that. People sell their coupe for an M3, then realize that it just isn't as much fun, then either switch back or complain about it on the forums.

Don't bother with the M3, especially if it means a car payment.

If I had both cars for free, I wouldn't mind having the M3 for occasional roadtrips but it's nowhere near as fun. Throw huge $$$ into the mix and it's a no-brainer.

does that apply to the e9X M3 as well? I was under the impression that most who switch from the z3 try out the e46 and then switch back

I'm not sure making the M3 bigger and heavier is really the solution to Z3er complaints. Damn thing must be bigger than an E34 by now.

I think that the common issue people find is that the M3 in general is just a bigger, more refined car. If you really like an M Coupe, you probably don't appreciate those features of the M3, at least in the scope of it being a replacement for the Coupe.

If I ever had a chance/reason to own a Z3C/Z3MC, I'd never let it go. That styling is what really piqued my interest in the Z world.

+1

My life's mission was to acquire an S54 Z3MC until the Z4MC made an appearance -- then that was my life's mission

Well, I have an S54 MC and an E90 M3. I only bought the M3 because BMW hail damaged my ordered MZ4.

Both are excellent. They have little in common. The M3 could be my only car I guess, but I would miss the hell out of my MC and I would regret it.

As others have said, I enjoy vehicles a whole lot more when I have no payment or debt on them. You should keep yours until it is paid off and see how it feels for a while, then decide.

my suggestion, active autowerke stage 2, meth/water injection, 3.73, nice grippy tires, suspension, brakes, rear end treatment, and go toast an new m3. ask me how i know. dont look at my pic at the bottom beacause that pic is about a year old. or if you decide on an m3, sell me the coupe. im not too far from you, it'll be an easy transaction.

Very nice job. I suspect it added quite a bit of weight, but it looks really clean, and I bet it sounds awesome. What is the grill made of?

Do you have more pics in an online album? Please email so I don't derail this thread too much.

Keep the Coupe. There's nothing else like it. There will always be M3s...

You would be absolutely bonkers to buy a kit from VF, more info here:

Stuff like this is not uncommon for them.

M3's are a dime a dozen. They are great cars, but nowhere near as fun to drive (in my opinion). Your car is more of a collector too. For these reasons I would keep the coupe. I believe you would really miss your coupe affter a few months of owning an e46 M3.

The only benifit I see is that it is easier to find parts to mod the M3.

I would only buy the e9x M3. I will need to have long test drives than i will figure it out from there.

Once you spend some time in the new M3, I would be very interested to know what you decide and why.

btw, your coupe is very well done. makes me want one.

Keep it and still buy a 2008/2009 M3. Why give up a perfectly good car? You will miss it i bet you.

Good call. And to the OP, not 13000, under 700 S54 M Coupes.

Just buy a used E9x M3 to save a few bucks, and you'll be able to afford to keep the M Coupe too, versus buying an E9x brand new.

That would be a perfect world. But my $$$$ flow is not that good. i'll need the extra $$$$ for a down payment, and i only have a 2 car garage. (my wife has one spot and i have the other). last, she doesn't care about cars so its not easy to convince her to let me buy a $45-$60 k car. let alone have two cars. i might be able to convince her to take the Z3C and i get the ///M but then i would need some $$$$ to fall out of a tree.

True, but then I guess I just don't see the point. I'm in the same boat, minus the desire for an e9x M3. I could stretch and afford the payments on one, I just don't want to. I'd rather drive something I can more easily afford, because that M3's gonna lose $20k in value in 2 years, and that's just too painful for me and my wage slave cash flow

Then again, if you only have 2 cars, and you need something bigger than a 2-seater, I suppose I could see swapping the M Coupe for something with more seats.. sadly
