Blizzard in NYC with new 19's and X-drive
Having had previous 7's outfitted with my own winter Dunlap SP Winter Sport M3's on 18" rims which were outstanding, I am very concerned about using my new 2010 750Lix fitted with 19" summer run flats in the next few days in snow and ice on Long Island.
Are there any particular systems issues with swapping the Goodyear Excellence RF with winter Dunlaps which aren't run flats? What would happen if I get a flat tire? While no one at the dealer has specific knowledge of how a 7 with x-drive handles in the snow, after this weekend there'll be plenty of stories. I guess we're going to be the guinea pigs. |

I wouldn't drive it in the snow - i'd even rent something for a few days, it'd be worth it for you.
I finally put my snows on yesterday (a little late this year).

Safety First
I live in CT and just put on my snow tires yesterday for this snow storm. I'd rather take my new non-x-drive 750i with snow tires over an x-drive without snow tires anytime in the snow. When was the last time you've seen an accident because somebody couldn't accelerate as opposed to not being able to stop? Two of my neighbors trashed their AWD cars last winter thinking otherwise while my "non-winter friendly" RWD M5 with snow tires did fine. They are both believers now and were the first to put on their snow tires before Thanksgiving this year.

I was just out in the white stuff in the wife's Lexus GX 470. That's a four-wheel drive truck with all-seasons and I was really wishing for winter tires on the thing given how slippery the roads are.
There was no way I was going to take my 535 x-drive out now even though I've got all-seasons mounted. Agreed with everyone here that winter tires are way more important than all wheel drive for dealing with snow.

I can't go through deep snow with my car, but with a set of Blizzaks, it goes well in snow.
My first BMW, the 323i, went just about anywhere on its set of snow tires - in fact, it was quite a lot of fun in the snow.
