iPhone integration alternative

*********** EDIT **********
This is NOT going to work in BMW. Unfortunately, the car's Hands-Free system either jams the signal from the phone to the gateway, or taxes the phone's BT unit to the point that music gets choppy - unusable. Initially I attributed this to gappy streams from Pandora and Last.fm over 3G, since it worked perfectly well with the gateway connected to the home stereo, with my iPhone streaming music to it and BT headphones used as a Hands-Free system (for handling phone calls). Should have done more thorough testing before posting this... Sorry!

I am still testing the very concept with various phones and A2DP devices. So far none worked in BMW with an iPhone - neither the one I was referring to in this thread (BlackBerry Stereo Gateway), nor any A2DP headphones I tried (Motorola S9, Motorola S805).

********* END EDIT ***********

So, please disregard the whole thread.

Here is an alternative to the notorious Y-cable: Blackberry Stereo Gateway. It can be used with any phone supporting A2DP (stereo over Bluetooth) profile. It will also work with a PC/laptop outfitted with a BT adapter that supports A2DP Source.

It does require power-over-USB, so a charging adapter (or 6FL USB port) is needed for its operation. Once paired with the phone/PC/laptop and plugged in the AUX port, it does not require any interaction - just plug it in a USB adapter and forget about it. It will turn on automatically when the car is started.

I will use it extensively as I like to listen to streamed music (Pandora, Last.FM, etc.) and use a Navigon iPhone app. Using Navigon with the 6FL cable requires that iPod be running all the time (you can not stop/pause music) which is a bit of a nuisance sometimes.

The sound quality is excellent - same as over a wired connection to AUX.

The downside is that you can not control the music player from the steering wheel, but it is not that important as you can not control the stream anyway.

Hope this info could be useful to someone.

Thanks, very interesting. I'm guessing you can't use this and connect via bluetooth to the car's phone integration at the same time ????

BlackBerry Stereo Gateway is what it presents itself as (see the bottom of the iPhone screen in the pictures).

Cool app.

BTW - Love it that you have Led Zeppelin II on your iPhone in the first photo. One of my all time favorite records!

Regardless, it's not the name of the product presuming we are talking about the same thing - see http://docs.blackberry.com/en/smartp...Gateway-US.pdf

Yes, this is the same device, just different name for some reason.
