Running Boards Update

Well, the new running boards are installed and I think they make the E83 even better. I recall a previous poster who said they make your pant leg wet, I can very well see that but let that be my biggest worry in the new year. It appears they look much better on a darker color vehicle though. My auto body shop didn't charge me for the install, he needed a favor from me that I was grateful to do for him. They said it was about a three hour installation. If anyone is considering them, don't hesitate.

I love it..no cost? Great Deal.

Many complain that it gets mud on your legs, but miss the point that a five year old can really use them

love the look -- not seen them before with the std 17inchers. I think they look best with 18inch style 205s which is what the sport activity p[ackage gave you in 07-08. Still dang nice the way you have them. Congrats.

Thank you for the kind words. They ran about $600.00 for the parts.

Question width + aero?

I really want these because I want running boards on my X3 but every picture of these to me looks as if the width of the step on the side-skirt is the same and the running boards are just bolted on.

Now both my client and service advisor have told me this isn't the case, that it replaced the side skirt, and the description says it broadens the surface.. but I don't see this in any pics it just looks the same to me.

How wide is the step surface with the running boards installed?

Also, I can't seem to get an answer from anyone as to whether or not I can get them installed and if I need to replace parts of the body kit. I have the M aero kit according to this parts guy that said I MAY need to replace the fender flares as well but he wasn't sure.

1. Yes it is wider than the stock side trim. You can actually see it from photos. Look carefully and you will see that it's becoming narrow -> wide -> narrow as you look from the front to the back.

2. Yes, you need to get stock side fender flare kits as your M-kit won't be compatible with the running board. It's basically 3 piece on each side.

Here is a pic of the side of my X3:

Can anyone confirm that it is indeed the M kit that I have?

any ideas where to get the fender flares? I'm searching on Google but all I find is aftermarket stuff.

thanks.

You do not have the entire M kit. You have the M bumpers, but you do NOT have the M rocker panels and fender flares. You should be able to put the OEM running boards on in the place of your current black rocker panels.

The M body kit is painted the body color. The black color of your fender trim and rocker panel are an indication of the "regular" X3 trim pieces. The '06 model had a special body - trim configuration from the earlier X3 models.

I hope this helps.

It does. Now I just need to find out how much they charge to install. My service advisor gave me a card of the body shop they use.

I must admit I was lazy about these running boards. I told the body shop I wanted to keep the old sides. When I picked it up, they had put the old panels in the original box and taped it up. I was curious what they looked like but I had to borrow a truck to take them away and was in hurry. Now I need to get rid of them. I'm just lazy anymore. Anyone need any photos of what they look like?

Not at all, the box they new ones came in are the size of a casket. I was surprised about that myself. The box is HUGE. BTW I think the best thing of the running boards believe it or not is how the puddle lights under the mirrows really highlight them very nicely.

Puddle lights are the small lights located on the bottom of both side view mirrors so when you unlock the doors the lights show any puddles, that way the bosses over-priced shoes/pedicured tootsies won't get wet
